How I Met Your Mother made history last night.
Just not the kind any TV show really wants to make.
The HIMYM finale has been widely panned by critics and fans, with most thinking its major twists - the Mother is dead! Ted and Robin are together! - rendered the entire series theme, title and trajectory moot.
Where do you come down on the one-hour farewell? Was it merely a bad series finale? Or the worst series finale of all-time?
Compare the disappointing episode to the depressing, anger-filled, irritating ways in which other shows have come to an end now:
1. How I Met Your Mother
How I Met Your Mother killed off the mother AND split up Barney and Robin. In a word.... why?!?!?
2. Dexter
Dexter killed off Deb, left Harrison to be raised by a serial killer and turned Dexter into a lumberjack.
3. Gossip Girl
A happy ending for two couples? Yes. But Dan as Gossip Girl?!? Come on. Moreover, nothing could save the generally reviled final season(s).
4. The Sopranos
Call us crazy, but a series finale should not leave fans wondering if their cable went out.
5. Lost
No, they weren't all dead all along. But, yes, many of those unanswered questions will forever remain unanswered.
6. Weeds
Following Nancy and Andy finally having sex on the penultimate episode, Weeds skipped ahead eight years on its finale. So much for organic storytelling.
7. Seinfeld
The show about nothing tried to make itself about something on the series finale. Big mistake.
8. Big Love
What happened to Joey and Wanda? What about Tinny? The Big Love finale left many characters dangling... and it killed off Bill!
9. Desperate Housewives
Ghosts?!? Yes, ghosts. The Desperate Housewives finale concluded with a few apparitions coming out to say hello and a new housewife, with a secret of her own, moving in.
