How I Met Your Mother made history last night.

Just not the kind any TV show really wants to make.

The HIMYM finale has been widely panned by critics and fans, with most thinking its major twists - the Mother is dead! Ted and Robin are together! - rendered the entire series theme, title and trajectory moot.

Where do you come down on the one-hour farewell? Was it merely a bad series finale? Or the worst series finale of all-time?

Compare the disappointing episode to the depressing, anger-filled, irritating ways in which other shows have come to an end now:

How I Met Your Mother Finale Thoughts: Why?!?

Last night, CBS aired the much-anticipated How I Met Your Mother series finale.

You'd think that after watching for nine seasons we'd be sad that it was over. But afterwards it wasn't the realization that one of our favorite comedies had come to a close that depressed us. It was how it ended.  Mostly, it left many loyal fans asking one question:

Why?

Ted on the Finale

After spending this entire season celebrating Barney and Robin's wedding, it was crushing to watch their marriage crumble not 10 minutes later.

Viewers had already watched them break up once before. Why put us through it again? One moment we're seeing Barney dance with his new bride, looking as happy as he'd ever been... three years later, but only mere moments on screen, call it quits.

Why spend so much time making us care about this couple only to ruin them? It was completely disheartening.

On the upside, we loved that Barney eventually found the love of his life in his baby daughter. Watching how that little girl changed Barney was one of the highlights of the finale. We just wish the mother could have been someone he cared about instead of the faceless #31.

Moreover, after nine seasons of having Ted search for the love of his life, we only got a few short scenes before they killed here off. Why?!?

We understand that things happen in life, but this is a comedy about the trials of finding true love. We took this journey with Ted and the scene of the two of them meeting on that rainy train platform under the yellow umbrella was beautiful. In the end, we couldn't help but feel cheated that we - and Ted - didn't get more time.

Ted on the Finale

13. Ted on the Finale

This callback to the How I Met Your Mother pilot was not how fans were hoping the finale would end.

When Ted finally finishes his story about their mother, his kids tell him to go for it with Aunt Robin. What?!? Yes, for the kids it's been six years since their mom died. It makes sense. But for the audience, it's been 30 seconds. After hearing this story for so long, that ending was as dismaying as it was jarring.

From what we hear, the creators of the show had this ending planned all along and Ted an Robin getting back together may have worked in season three or four.

But by How I Met Your Mother season 9, they'd long convinced us that this pairing wouldn't work. So as Ted stood outside Robin's window with the same French horn so many years later, we were left asking, why?

Your turn, TV Fanatics. What did you think of the How I Met Your Mother series finale?

How I Met Your Mother Round Table: Series Finale

After nine seasons Ted finally met the mother of his children on the How I Met Your Mother series finale, only to end up with someone else.

Below, TV Fanatics Doug Wolfe, Leigh Raines, Robin Harry, Michelle Calbert and Christine Orlando discuss their favorite scenes, the shocking twists and the most disappointing moments after watching "Last Forever" Parts 1 and 2."

------------------------------------------------------

What was your favorite scene?

Doug: The scene with Barney and the baby brought tears to my eyes. Neil Patrick Harris played it so well - and you could tell that he was remembering his own children. The slow dawning of this precious soul and what she means to him was visible. I've been there too. That scene is so accurate it can't help but compel.

Leigh: I loved that Tracey persuaded Robin to come to the wedding. Most exes would have been intimidated to invite their fiance's ex to their wedding, but she knew it was important.

Robin: Definitely Barney meeting his daughter for the first time. Neil Patrick Harris absolutely nailed that scene. You could almost see Barney transform into a different kind of person.

Michelle: Barney taking one look at his baby girl and immediately saying the line that he thought he never would say and actually mean. It was beautiful and NPH broke my heart with the look in his eyes. I was crying as hard as he was when it was over.

Christine:  Yeah, have to say that Barney stole the hour when he met his baby girl. In a show about Ted looking for the love of his life, I don't know what it says that the one thing that made most everyone smile in the finale was Barney and his baby. I also loved Barney chastising the girls in the bar. If there was any doubt that Ella had changed Barney, that definitely wiped it all away and made me laugh all at once.

One Last Group Hug

What surprised you the most about the finale?

Doug: Honestly, I never expected the Mother to die. With all of the buildup and symbolism (including the yellow umbrella), I expected theirs to be one of the great loves you hear about. Her death seemed way too convenient - especially once we figured out why the writers wanted it.

Leigh: The scene with Barney and his daughter. I just didn't expect it at all. It was really beautiful.

Robin: Barney and Robin's divorce.  I mean, come on.  They spent an ENTIRE SEASON beating it into us that, despite their obvious mismatch and differences, they were supposed to be together. All to undo it in just 10 minutes!?  Seriously?!

Michelle: I could not believe it when Barney and Robin's marriage started going downhill so fast. We endured an entire season of their wedding and then there are already signs of trouble just a couple months in? It made me want to scream at my TV.

Christine:  What was the point of spending an entire season showing us how much Barney and Robin loved one another only to have Robin choose her career over Barney and have them divorce 10 minutes later? I loved this couple and couldn't wait for them to get married. I never saw their breakup coming and it felt like I'd wasted an entire season of TV as their relationship crumbled between commercial breaks. What a waste.

What was the biggest disappointment, if any?

Doug: Hands down, it was Barney and Robin getting a divorce. After their romantic build up over so many episodes, culminating in Barney's change in lifestyle and sincere destruction of the Bro Code, their divorce felt like a ripoff.  A complete and utter waste of potential. It made me dislike both Barney and Robin, just a bit.

Leigh: That they killed the awesome mother! The show was called How I Met Your Mother not "How I Went Back To Aunt Robin After She Peaced Me 20 Times." It just felt cheated in a way. Like what was the point of the whole story of how Ted met the kids' mother?

Robin: Tracy's death.  Knowing it was coming didn't make it better.  To me, her death cheapened Ted's whole journey to find her. She basically became a plot device to give Ted the children he was telling the story to, and then killed off so that the writers could meet their goal of having Robin and Ted be together. So much for the journey mattering more than the destination.

Michelle: The fact that Ted didn't end up with Tracy. I, too, had a strong feeling that it was coming, but I still watched the finale with the hope that I was wrong and that somehow, some way, everything would turn out alright for them. It made all the past seasons feel pointless. I mean, they could have put Ted and Robin together in the first episode.

Christine:  Setting aside Barney and Robin's divorce and even the mother's death, it was Ted going back to Robin. They'd spend 9 seasons showing us why it wouldn't work and that they were better as friends. And Robin became such a selfish loner in that last hour that it was hard to care what happened to her, so when Ted went running back to her I found it completely disappointing.

Over the entire series, who was your favorite couple?

Doug: Lily and Marshall. They went through so much and seemed to stick together no matter what. Their love for each other, while cloying sometimes, was real. I like how they still get excited about each other, after all this time.

Leigh: Agreed. Definitely Lily and Marshall. They were best friends above all else and that's what made them the best couple, their support for each other. Plus they always kept it fresh and had an awesome dynamic.

Robin: Lily and Marshall!! They fought, they broke up, they had their differences...but they always made it work. They accepted each other's changes and quirks, and they were never afraid to face the storms head-on.  Lilypad and Marshmallow are one of my favorite TV couples of all time.

Michelle: I have always loved Lily and Marshall and they were definitely the bright point throughout the finale. Their relationship is one that I've always admired and I would love to have one like it myself someday. That is what I think true love looks like.

Christine:  I had such high hopes for Barney and Robin and Ted And Tracy. In the end there was only Lily and Marshall. They were the one real couple on the show who endured the ups and downs of a relationship but never lost sight that they loved one another and wanted a life together.

What one thing would you have changed?

Doug: I would have had Barney and Robin at least make an attempt to work things out. Their ending was too facile, and too convenient. Look at Lily and Marshall: they had competing interests too, but they managed to figure it out. Ugh.

Leigh: They spent a season or more building up to Robin and Barney's wedding only to have them get divorced, what like 10 minutes in? Also I was really surprised how much Robin withdrew from the entire group. Also I wanted the mother to live. Honestly I would've changed a lot, sorry!

Robin: Just one? In that case, make it the entire last season.  If Robin and Ted were always end-game, the season could have been used to tell WAY better and more relevant stories. For example, it would have been nice to see Ted grieve and be ready to move on, instead of jumping from her death straight to, "I met your mom, I loved her, she died...can I go give Aunt Robin that blue French horn I've been holding on to for 25 years?"

Michelle: The ending, absolutely. The whole part where Tracy got sick and died and Ted's kids figured out he liked Robin and he went to her with the blue French horn. I would chop all that out and make it end with Ted finding Tracy and the two of them living happily ever after.

Christine: I want to change so much of this hour but mostly Barney and Robin's divorce. It felt like such a slap in the face after all of the buildup to their wedding. And if they had remained together then that would get rid of Ted running back to Robin at the end which the more I think about the more I despise.

Any final thoughts and how would you rate the series finale of How I Met Your Mother?

Doug:  I'd give it a B, at best. I mean, it all made sense at the end. The kids' perception about how Ted talked so much about Robin but hardly said anything at all about the Mother was telling and right on. (Even though I feel irritated by it). The writers knew what they were doing and clearly had the end in mind. So they succeeded in their goal. They don't get an A because they also succeeded in disappointing so many hard core fans, including me.

Leigh: C. I agree with Doug about how the kids' perception was spot on. I see why the writers did what they did. While it wasn't my preference, I'm really split on what was the truly the most fitting way to end the show. On one hand it was supposed to be about how Ted met the Mother. On the other hand, it honored a very long on and off relationship between him and Robin. I figure a C is my way of saying it was like eh.

Robin: I give it a C+...and the only reason it passes is because the cast did an amazing job with what they were given.  I love the cast and I will miss the characters.  But as a culmination of the past 9 years, it not only fails, but taints a good portion of the show's existence. The show went on too long, and Ted and Robin changed too much over the years to be a viable option as a couple.

Michelle: For me it was a D-. Once Barney and Robin got divorced and the gang was split up, it wasn't nearly as much fun to watch. I hoped the ending would save it, but that was a wash for me as well, which made the overall experience a pretty bad one.

Christine:  C-. The cast was wonderful but the ending was horrible. So much build up for Ted and the Mother and Barney and Robin's wedding was dismantled in minutes. As Robin says above, it taints a good portion of the show and makes me not want to watch the reruns which I've always loved. Very disappointing.

Happy Father's Day, TV Fanatics!

As you know by now, the small screen was filled with awesome dads in 2013-2014. We had single dads, traditional dads, double the dads, cop dads... and even vampire dads.

Whether they were saving their children from a death curse or just dealing with normal growing pains, these fathers all stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the park.

We've complied a list of fatherly favorites below. Cast your vote for the #1 Dad on TV now and then consider the WORST FAKE FATHERS out there as well...

Rick Castle (Castle)
Castle is our #1 single dad on the list. He single handedly raised daughter Alexis and even when she turned on him early in season six in a fit of young love (remember Pi?) and growing pains, he only gave back unconditional love.

10 Truly Terrible Finales: Where Does True Blood Rank?

True Blood came to a painful, insulting end Sunday night, with most loyal viewers of this HBO hit agreeing the series concluded in a boring, almost hypocritical manner.

Here is my take on why the True Blood finale so badly missed its mark.

But was the suicide-based finale the worst concluding episode of a show in TV history? What other comedies and dramas would compete against True Blood for this (dis)honor?

Compare the events in Bon Temps this week with other disappointing finales below and decide:

Did we leave any series out? And, of course, which is the worst of the worst?

Suffice it to say, the How I Met Your Mother series finale left many fans riotously angry displeased.

But producers have included a deleted scene (from How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 20) in the Complete Series DVD Set that might at least help some viewers find a sense of closure.

In short: we now know the answer to the mystery of the pineapple!!!

How I Met Your Mother GIF

As a quick refresher: Ted invited Danica McKeller’s Trudy back to his place on a How I Met Your Mother Season 1 episode. When the two awoke, there was a pineapple on Ted’s nightstand.

The question of why hung over the sitcom for the rest of its run.

In the deleted scene, however, we see Ted at The Captain’s house after Lily sought refuge there following her departure from the Farhampton Inn. (This is the episode in which we learn she's pregnant again.)

Once everyone chills out, The Captain stops Ted and says,:"You stole one thing from me, one thing I can forgive. Steal more than one thing, well, that's another matter."

Cut to Ted's flashback to 2005 and witness him taking the pineapple from The Captain's townhouse. BAM! There it is.

Head over to Buzzfeed to check out the full clip, watch How I Met Your Mother online to relive the mystery and breathe a sigh of relief. We have our answer, HIMYM Fanatics.

11 Worst Series Finales in TV History: Going Out With a Whimper

Some shows go out on a high note, closing the book on their sagas with an epic final chapter that not only ties up loose ends, but leaves fans generally satisfied.

Then there are these shows, whose finales range from bad to beyond bad.

Sons of Anarchy
Talk about dragging out the obvious! The Sons of Anarchy finale was two hours for some reason, despite very little happening and the ending having been forecasted for weeks on end.

You can't please everyone, of course, but it feels like a number of high-profile shows have gone out on a less than stellar note within the past season or two.

True Blood limped to the finish line with a painful, insulting finale last summer. How I Met Your Mother left fans scratching their heads. Dexter was just ... ugh.

Even FX's acclaimed, wildly popular Sons of Anarchy disappointed many viewers with a series finale that was rather drawn out and telegraphed at best.

What other comedies and dramas can compete against these lackluster conclusions for the undesirable title of Worst Series Finales in TV history?

We know, it's all in the eye of the beholder ... but watching how bad some of these finales were was truly a sight to behold, in our minds. What about yours?

Did we leave any series out? Did we give any of these finales a bad rap? And, of course, which is the worst of the worst in your mind as a TV viewer?

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? Seriously. When it comes to television, it's often hard to decide which came first.

Do you remember those adorable faces that showed up on your TV screens every week, and would you even recognize them now? Some of you might even be too young to have watched these shows live, but that's what reruns are for, right?

Child stars often have tragic endings, brought on by the stress of show biz and the bizarre way they grow up in the public eye. But sometimes they come out on top, free and clear of all the drama and heartbreak.

Take a look at our list of 13 child stars you loved 20 years ago (20 YEARS? OMG WE'RE SO OLD!) and what they're up to these days.

Whether they ended up battling drugs and anorexia, or they're crushing it at the box office to this day, these kids will always hold a special place in our hearts. We grew up alongside them, and they were our role models, playmates, and imaginary friends.

This is the shortlist in a never ending supply of famous youths, so be sure to sound off with your favorite 90s child star in comments below!

Throwback Thursday: 15 TV Theme Songs That Take Us Way Back

The theme song is unfortunately a dying art these days, with only a select few shows dedicating their extra time to a musical intro.

In days gone by, the theme song used to be the bread and butter of TV, telling the audience what the tone of your show was, and giving them an extra 30 seconds to race to the TV so they didn't miss anything. Today, you're lucky if you even get a 'previously on' reel. We were feeling nostalgic this week at TV Fanatic, so we dragged out a few of the 'oldie but a goodie' theme songs from the past.

Take a look at some of our favorites that take us back!

1. One Tree Hill

One tree hill intro
This theme song became the anthem to so many high school students, and to this day you probably can't hear it without thinking "Brooke and Lucas SO should have ended up together." There was also that great season where every episode had a new cover when the theme played. Awesome.

2. Friends

Friends season 4 opening
Even if you've never seen a single episode of Friends, you bet your ass that when that *clap*clap*clap*clap* part comes up, you are at the ready. Friends was a cultural monster, and their theme song played a huge part of that.

3. Cheers

Cheers theme song
Where everybody knows your name. That says it all, doesn't it? The theme song for Cheers was so memorable, it became the tagline for the bar that served as the setting for one of the most popular and successful comedies of all time. Hard to top that!

4. True Blood

True blood opening credits
This one is from the not so distant past, but the True Blood opening was a creepy homage to both southern tradition and blood and guts. For such a sensual show, the theme certainly played around with some strange elements, but it was no less effective for it. True Blood wins a spot in the lineup for straight up ick factor.

5. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

The fresh prince of bel air intro
Admit it, you know every word. If anyone even starts to hum this song at a party, at least fifteen drunken idiots start shouting it from the rooftops. That's when you know you've reached the top. Will Smith truly created a masterpiece with this one.

6. Veronica Mars

Veronica mars theme song
There's nothing too flashy about the Veronica Mars theme song at first look, but after you've spent three days straight marthoning the first two seasons? It starts to take on a surreal deeper meaning. Don't even get me started on how they altered the song for the college years. I just can't.
