19 Characters with Jobs that Drive Them Crazy

Let's face it, the lives of TV characters always look more exciting and fun than ours -- especially their work lives. They're having cool adventures, pulling off awesome pranks, or succeeding in following their passions. None that ever seems to happen in real life.

We get so attracted to and envious of what we see onscreen, we tend to forget TV characters' jobs are not as glamorous as we think.

Many characters despise their jobs for pretty much the same reasons you hear out in the real world. The bosses won't listen; the assignments are impossible, and it's boring -- incredibly boring.

These characters certainly experienced their share of work-related frustrations. As they found out, it's not always easy to stay cool while your job is crushing your soul.

Rome - A Million Little Things

Rome shakes his head - A Million Little Things

Many factors contributed to Rome's depression. His job directing meaningless commercials was one of them.

Quitting his job didn't make his depression magically go away, but it was a step to in the right direction to admitting he could not continue going through life pretending everything was fine.

Michelle - Bunheads

Michelle has a confession - Bunheads

Michelle's a triple threat. She sings, acts, and dances. Unfortunately, casting directors are always passing her over.

Tired of rejection, she impulsively accepted a marriage proposal from Hubbel, one of the rare people who could see how special Michelle is, and he took her away from Vegas to Paradise.

It was there she found her calling as a dance teacher to an upcoming generation of Bunheads.

Stamets - Star Trek: Discovery

Out of control Stamets - Star Trek: Discovery

Stamets loves his research but hated seeing it appropriated for the war effort. Then, to save Discovery, he merged with the spore drive.

It nearly killed him, and the effect it had on his mind wasn't pretty.  He was able to recover, but once he did, he discovered that his husband had been murdered.

Stamets was able to find a way to bring Dr. Culber back, but that's a completely different story.

Diane - Cheers

Diane answers the phone

The last job intellectually-minded Diane would want is cocktail waitressing at a place like Cheers, and her highbrow airs did not exactly endear her to Carla and the regulars.

Not content with wasting her life away in a pub, she continued to pursue her literary ambitions, despite the many rejections she had to endure. Close to the date of her wedding with Sam, she received the news a publisher loved one of her unfinished manuscripts and wanted to publish it.

It wasn't quite a happy ending to a long journey for Diane. The price of fulfilling her dream was her relationship with Sam.

Tyrion - Game of Thrones

Tyrion resigns - Game of Thrones

Tyrion wanted Dany to be a wise and just monarch worthy of ruling Westeros.

Seeing Dany mercilessly rain fire down upon Kings Landing and his siblings' corpses' made him realize he couldn't take being Hand of the Dragon Queen anymore.

It wasn't only Dany's shortcomings that made him miserable but his Tyrion's failures at governance as well. The last thing Tyrion wanted was to continue being part of Westeros' ruling body, but Bran wouldn't have it any other way.

Robin - How I Met Your Mother

Robin at work - How I Met Your Mother

Most of what we saw of Robin's work life was pretty embarrassing.  She was forced to cover dumb, fluff stories. She starred in an adult diaper commercial that ran for years. Coworkers made of fun of her. There was also the time she slipped on horse poop while on the air.

At least we know she eventually became mega-successful. She became a highly sought after journalist -- traveling the world and finally delivering news stories she wanted to cover.

Too bad her love life would never reach those same highs.

41 TV Couples With Absolutely No Chemistry

Luke - Gilmore Girls

Luke attends a town meeting - Gilmore Girls

Wonder why Luke's always grumpy?

If his customers aren't pestering him for the wi-fi password, they're flaunting his rules or coming up with overly complicated food orders. Plus there's the hassle of dealing with Taylor.

However, a lot of Luke's bluster is a facade. He likes running a diner and has a soft spot for the quirky townspeople who are his customers. Don't ask about the wi-fi because it really does annoy him.

Arthie - GLOW

Arthie is over it - GLOW

Arthie knew her character Beirut the Mad Bomber was going to be seen as a villain, but she wasn't expecting beer cans to be thrown at her face.

Ever since the taping of the pilot, she has been desperately searching for another wrestling persona.

She tried to give herself a dramatic makeover into a heroic character, but Dawn and Stacy stole the idea right from under her.

Kevin - This Is Us

Kevin shows off - This Is Us

After his hopes of a football career died, Kevin found his way into acting. It turned out he was good and landed a starring role in a sitcom -- a terrible sitcom.

After being demeaned one too many times, Kevin snapped and quit his job in a way that should have blacklisted him from any other acting gigs.

Instead, leaving The Manny was the best thing he could have done for his career. If Kevin hadn't left, Ron Howard would have never offered him the chance to co-star with Slyvester Stallone in a big-budget prestige film.

Linda - Better Off Ted

Linda needs wine - Better Off Ted

Considering the unethical business practices, the nightmarish bureaucracy, and the high likelihood the lab guys will accidentally turn you into a mutant, Linda's not wrong to be upset that she works for Veridian Dynamics.

Though she often tries to take a stand, she finds herself getting caught in the crossfire and joining Medieval Fight Club to work out the stress.

Her efforts to make Veridian haven't been completely in vain. She did get the company to create a roof garden.

27 Characters Who Have a Secret and Can Keep It

Mitchell - Modern Family

Mitchel, Attorney at Law - Modern Family

Mitchell likes being a lawyer well enough but finding the right area of law to practice was more of a challenge than he anticipated

Klinger - M*A*S*H

Klinger takes flight

Klinger is a hardworking corporal who always puts the wounded first. The problem is he hates being in a warzone and witnessing all the deaths war causes, which is why he will do anything to get out.

He'll dress like Scarlett O'Hara, eat a Jeep, and hang glide his way to freedom.

None of his schemes ever worked, and, to the surprise of everyone, Klinger stayed in Korea after everyone else went home.

Chloe - Lucifer

Chloe vents - Lucifer

After she partnered up with Lucifer, the relationships with her colleagues improved, but then she was stuck putting up with Lucifer's eccentricities and impulsiveness.

Despite his eccentricities, self-centeredness, and unreliableness, which often gets in the way of solving murders, Chloe wasn't entirely impervious to Lucifer's charms. She fell for the Devil.

Ted - Scrubs

No ketchup for Ted - Scrubs

Ted is mostly inept as a lawyer. He never gets any respect. Worst of all, Dr. Kelso uses him as a personal punching bag.

It's no surprise he tried to throw himself off Sacred Heart's roof and why the best thing he could do for himself was quit being an attorney and become a traveling musician -- which landed him in Cougar Town.

Eve - Killing Eve

Eve in denial - Killing Eve

Even though she worked for British Intelligence, Eve was wasting away as she was always to desk duty.

She got her opportunity for a more exciting job when assigned to track drown Villanelle. Now anything related to Villanelle comes with a lot of grief, and the assignment is creating havoc in Eve's personal and professional life.

It doesn't get much more desperate than being shot at and left for dead, which is how where we left Eve. Perhaps she's rethinking the decision to leave behind the paperwork for fieldwork. Probably not but we won't find out until the next season airs.

Are These 'Ships Unfairly Hated, or Did They Get What They Deserved?

$

0

There are a lot of good reasons to dislike a pairing and a lot of ridiculous ones that go beyond all rhyme or reason.

Related: 17 Times Labor Went Above and Beyond the Pain

Once in awhile the negative feelings are justified, but some relationships seem to get more hate than they deserve.

Are the following 'ships unfairly hated, or did they get what they deserved?

Betty and Archie - Riverdale

Betty and Archie

The main reason Betty and Archie get so much hate is that they interfere with two fan-favorite pairings. Both Betty and Jughead and Archie and Veronica are ships that fans everywhere love.

But the truth is, Betty and Archie's best friends to possible lovers dynamic is one of the best parts of the series.

Rue and Lexi - Euphoria

Rue and Lexi

Everyone wants Rue and Jules to be together, which is understandable. But Rue and Lexi also have a fun dynamic, and it would be incredible for them to explore other layers of their relationship someday;

It's been hinted at multiple times throughout Euphoria Season 1 that Lexi's feelings for Rue go beyond friendship, and we'd like to see that be addressed.

Kara and Mon-El - Supergirl

Kara and Mon-El

Mon-El wasn't a great guy when he first joined the show, but a lot of fans like to ignore his character development since his presence interfered with other popular pairings.

Related: Supergirl Stars Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood Are Married!

You can ship whoever you want, but during his time with Kara, Mon-El grew into a person who would quite literally sacrifice himself for the common good.

Ryan and Taylor - The OC

Ryan and Taylor

Ryan and Taylor were oddly perfect for each other. However, Ryan and Marissa were the couple everyone was rooting for, so fans didn't take this relationship well.

They may not have ended up together, and they may not have been widely loved, but the fan reaction was still surprising.

Michael and Maria - Roswell, New Mexico

Maria and Michael

Michael Guerin is a bisexual character, and he always will be. Whether he's with Alex or Maria, his sexuality remains unchanged and he still provides representation.

Related: The Handmaid's Tale Sequel in the Works at Hulu

While Michael and Alex seem to have a bit more chemistry, there's nothing wrong with his relationship with Maria and we're excited to see where it goes. We love both and hate neither.

Spencer and Caleb - Pretty Little Liars

Spencer and Caleb

Spencer and Caleb always had chemistry. They were the two most intellectual people in the group, and they had a lot in common.

Pretty Little Liars was pushing Hanna and Caleb from the beginning, but even though this relationship happened late in the game, it wasn't a bad one.

Ella and Dan - Lucifer

Dan and Ella

A lot of fans seem to think this relationship came a bit out of left-field, but the potential was always there. Ella and Dan are both two loveable characters who have always enjoyed each other's company.

They haven't had a lot of luck in the love department, so it makes sense for them to give things a shot. These two deserve happiness just as much as anyone.

Dan and Blair - Gossip Girl

Dan and Blair

Dan and Blair's dynamic is the best thing that Gossip Girl ever did. In a show that was so wrapped up in secrets, drama, and appearances, Dan and Blair brought something else to the show entirely.

They proved that a healthy relationship is built on trust, friendship, and teamwork. Why did everyone prefer her with Chuck, again?

Jessica and Alex - 13 Reasons Why

Jessica and Alex

Jessica and Alex are the pure and healthy relationship that 13 Reasons Why needed. The series is filled with violence and toxicity, and Jessica and Alex were one of the few spots of light.

Related: 13 Reasons Why Star Quits Instagram After Backlash Over New Character

It's hard not to love the person Justin has become, but it's surprising just how many people support his relationship with Jessica after what he did to her.

Ted and Robin - How I Met Your Mother

Ted and Robin

There's no doubt that Ted and Robin ending up together was a slap in the face to fans who were invested in Swarkles. But when it comes down to Ted and Ronin's relationship, they loved each other from the start.

It's beautiful that after Ted's loss and Robin's divorce, the two of them were able to find love with each other. How could anyone be upset over their happiness?

Alex and Sutton - The Bold Type

Alex and Sutton

Sutton and Richard's relationship isn't all that. Sure, the forbidden love aspect helped keep the spark alive, and there were so cute moments during the beginning of the series.

But what Sutton and Alex could have had will always be more endearing than what we got. We'll always hold out hope that one day that may rekindle their relationship.

Scott and Malia - Teen Wolf

Scott and Malia

After Kira was written off the show for no reason, it made sense that fans weren't happy with Scott having another love interest. It was also a bit weird considering that Malia dated Scott's best friend.

However, Stiles was finally with Lydia, and the chemistry between Scott and Malia was undeniable. They ended up being all kinds of adorable, and there wasn't anything to dislike about their relationship.

Rachel and Joey - Friends

Rachel and Joey

The chemistry was there, the potential was there, but for some reason, the writers and the fans weren't there. Most people are still stuck on the underwhelming on and off relationship between Rachel and Ross.

Related: 17 Things We Would Need From a Friends Revival

As time has gone on, more people are starting to come around to the idea of Rachel and Joey, but a large majority of viewers still don't see the sparks.

Iris and Eddie - The Flash

Iris and Eddie

Iris was always going to end up with Barry, but Eddie was a hard character to hate. Even Barry took a liking to him, and the two ended up being good friends.

At the end of the day, Eddie sacrificed himself to save Iris and the people that he loves. He was an all-around great person, and his relationship with Iris was beautifully tragic.

Emma and Neal - Once Upon a Time

Emma and Neal

Emma and Neal's love was something to strive for. They both sacrificed so much for each other and loved one another until the end.

Captain Swan was obviously the 'ship of the show, and Hook was Emma's true love, but we also have to appreciate Emma and Neal for what they were.

Wil and Eretria - The Shannara Chronicles

Wil and Eretria

Out of all the characters, Eretria had the most chemistry with Amberle. But once she was out of the picture her chemistry with Wil seemed to skyrocket.

Related: Liza's Indecisiveness on Younger is Making it Hard to Watch

Eretria's relationship with Lyria was cute, but that's all it was. Eretria and Wil had the closest relationship on the show, and they deserved more love.

Jake and Cassie - The Secret Circle

Jake and Cassie

Most viewers were on Team Adam, and it was hard to understand why. The will they/won't they was fun at first, but it quickly got boring.

Meanwhile, Jake and Cassie ticked all of the best boxes. The fake relationship turned real, enemies to lovers, mutual pining, and a slow burn. What is there to hate?

Chidi and Simone - The Good Place

Chidi and Simone

No one has chemistry like Cheleanor and we've got our fingers crossed that they're going to be endgame. But there was nothing to dislike about Chidi's relationship with Simone, and it was fun while it lasted.

Even Eleanor shipped it for a while, and both characters deserve nothing but love. They're just too precious for the hate.

Jace and Clary - Shadowhunters

Jace and Clary

We're still a bit unsure why Jace and Clary got so much hate during Shadowhunters' run. They're relationship was pure and healthy, and didn't get in the way of any major 'ships.

But, regardless, the series finale proved that their love is strong enough to overcome anything, and we'll never give up hope that we'll get to see them in a revival someday.

19 Couples Who Refused to Define the Relationship

$

Your favorite ship finally getting together is an incredible feeling. Nothing can rain on your parade...until the couple refuses to DTR.

They may be keeping things "casual," but they need to admit what they mean to each other and go all in. As shippers, we're in it for the long haul.

We created a slideshow belows of 19 couples who refused to define the relationship!

Garrett and Dina - Superstore

Garrett and Dina

Garrett and Dina are singlehandedly the inspiration behind this list. Since the two are co-workers and Dina is Garrett's superior, they had to disclose their relationship to corporate.

Related: GLOW: Coming to an End!

They refused to check the box stating they were in a relationship, and they were on the phone with corporate for hours campaigning to get a new option added.

Dan and Charlotte - Lucifer

Charlotte and Dan

Dan and Charlotte didn't realize how much they meant to each other until it was too late. Dan had previously been sleeping with Lucifer's mom when she was in Charlotte's body, and he had no idea that she was possessed.

When Charlotte comes back and remembers nothing, she and Dan have to start all over from scratch. He eventually falls for the real her, but Charlotte is killed almost directly after she and Dan realize that they want to be together.

Barney and Robin - How I Met Your Mother

Barney and Robin

Barney and Robin are the poster children for couples who hate to DTR. They were so against defining their relationship that Lily kept them physically locked in a room until they were willing to do so.

Related: Titans Season 2 Episode 3 Review: Ghosts

Robin even went on a date at Barney's encouragement to prove that there was nothing serious going on between them. Needless to say, they began to realize how wrong they were when Barney showed up and punched her date in the face.

Beth and Rio - Good Girls

Beth and Rio

As of Good Girls Season 2, Beth and Rio are not in a great place. But if Good Girls Season 2 Episode 13 never happened, or happened differently, their relationship may have gone in another direction.

Although neither of them would ever admit it, something was going on between them besides just sex. Rio always had a bit of a soft spot towards Beth, and some of the things he did for her were unexpected, to say the least.

Jake and Amy - Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Jake and Amy

Dating your co-worker can get complicated, so after Jake and Amy end up kissing at the precinct they decide to keep things "light and breezy."

But there was an emotional investment on both sides, and it didn't take them long to realize that "light and breezy" wasn't going to work. Even though it was risky, Jake and Amy took a gamble and went all in.

Xo and Rogelio - Jane the Virgin

Xo and Rogelio

Xo's relationship with Jane's father was a rollar coaster. For a while, we didn't know what they were to each other, and it didn't seem like they were too sure either.

Related: Jim Parsons, Mayim Bialik Reunite for FOX Comedy

After a series of ups and downs, Xo and Rogelio finally realize that they are meant for each other and end up getting married at the Marbella Hotel.

Bloom and Reynolds - New Amsterdam

Bloom and Reynolds

Bloom and Reynolds were sleeping together for a time, but Bloom decides to be honest and let Reynolds know that she wants more than just sex.

Reynolds tells Bloom that he's only interested in being with a black woman for the long-term. When Reynolds tries to start things up between them again, Bloom turns him down.

Schmidt and Cece - New Girl

Schmidt and Cece

At first, Schmidt and Cece were on two completely separate wavelengths. Schmidt wanted a real relationship and for the entire world to know that they were together, but Cece was embarrassed by him and continuously reminded Schmidt that they were just having sex.

Cece eventually admitted that she liked Schmidt for real, and they decide to enter an official relationship. It doesn't work out at first, but they end up married with a daughter by the end of the show.

Chase and Cameron - House

Chase and Cameron

Chase and Cameron are another example of how "just sex" can easily turn into something more. Their romance definetly wasn't easy, but that doesn't mean we love it any less.

Related: Suits Series Finale Trailer: How Will It End?

Despite all the drama we had to witness, Chase and Cameron proved that true love could conquer all.

Michael and Alex - Roswell, New Mexico

Michael and Alex

As of Roswell, New Mexico Season 1, viewers still don't know what the deal with Malex is. They fell for each other in high school, and for the past ten years, they have continuously come back to each other.

Although it's clear that they love each other, Michael chose to pursue Maria in Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 13. We have no idea what the new season holds for them, but here's to hoping they'll call it official in the future.

Jake and Faye - The Secret Circle

Jake and Faye

Jake and Faye were pretty much just sleeping together, although it was clear that Faye wanted more. Jake was always hung up on Cassie, and it was hard for us not to love that relationship as well.

But fans seemed to be rooting for Jake and Faye, and despite the show's cancellation, it was implied that Jake was ready to give a relationship with Faye a real shot.

Jackson and April - Grey's Anatomy

Jackson and April

Jackson and April were friends for years before anything romantic happened between them. April ended up losing her virginity to Jackson, and as much as she wanted to, she couldn't seem to stay away from him.

It took them far too long to realize how much they loved each other. We know that April is no longer on the show, but that doesn't stop us from hoping that she and Jackson will have their happily ever after.

Josh and Liza - Younger

Liza and Josh

Unsure of what to call their relationship at first, Josh and Liza said that they're "hanging out." Even though Liza was still lying about her age, it was obvious that they had strong feelings for each other.

Related: Grey's Anatomy is Bringing Back a Key Character in Season 16

When the truth finally came out, it didn't diminish Josh's love for her, even if it did cause a huge fight. They were an official couple for a while before splitting up, but something tells us their story isn't over.

Jonah and Amy - Superstore

Amy and Jonah

Jonah and Amy's reluctance to label their relationship was a bit frustrating. They were a three-season slow burn, and they were already pretty deep in their feels by the time they finally got together.

It took months for Jonah and Amy to call themselves an official couple. Because of the excruciating wait, we can't help but squeal anytime they refer to each other as their boyfriend or girlfriend.

Dyson and Bo - Lost Girl

Dyson and Bo

Dyson and Bo tried their best to be friends with benefits and to have no strings attached. But has that ever successfully worked for any television couple in history?

To no one's surprise, Dyson and Bo end up developing feelings for each other.

Jane and Ryan - The Bold Type

Jane and Ryan

Jane and Ryan start sleeping together after they both write eye-opening articles concerning female pleasure. Ryan changes Jane's sex-life completely, and she quickly starts to realize she has feelings for Ryan.

Ryan isn't a relationship-type guy, but with Jane that eventually changes.

Chandler and Monica - Friends

Chandler and Monica

What happens in London stays in London, right? Wrong. Chandler and Monica may have tried to keep their relationship overseas, but true love can't be contained.

Related: American Horror Story Season 9 Episode 1 Review: Camp Redwood

It took them a while to call things official, and Monica even agreed to go on a date with someone else since Chandler said they were "just goofing around." But Chandler eventually gets over his fear of commitment, and the two go on to be the best couple on Friends.

J.D. and Elliot - Scrubs

J.D. and Elliot

J.D. and Elliot's romance was complicated. It was hard to put a label on their relationship because it was difficult to keep up with what was going on.

They tried to keep things casual, but as could be expected, it didn't go well. We couldn't be happier that they got married and were able to put all the complications behind them.

Chloe and Alek - The Nine Lives of Chloe King

Chloe and Alek

Chloe and Alek deserve so much better. Alek had always been head over heels for Chloe, but Chloe was torn between him and Brian. Because of her conflicting feelings, she never fully went all-in with him.

The Nine Lives of Chloe King was canceled, and their story was never resolved. However, the writers created a movie script to close the series, and although they were never able to produce it, Chloe realized that she was in love with Alek.

Don't you hate when your favorite couple has an unsatisfying ending?

Sometimes a couple gets together by the end of a show, but we expected more given the effort it took them to get there.

Related: 31 Couples Who Inspired Each Other's Inner Comedian

Talk of divorce, memory loss, and half-assed weddings weren't things that left us with the warm and fuzzies when some series came to a close.

We created a slideshow below of 17 endgame 'ships we love -- with endings that we hate.

1. Stiles and Lydia - Teen Wolf

Stiles and lydia teen wolf
For six agonizing seasons, fans waited for Stiles and Lydia to finally admit their feelings for each other. Once they finally got together, Dylan O'Brien left the show and returned only for the series finale. Their kiss wasn't as satisfying as it could have been, and viewers didn't get to experience them as a real couple.

2. Mac and Harm - JAG/NCIS: Los Angeles

Mac and harm jag slash ncis los angeles
The entire series of JAG was one big will they/won’t they for these two with plenty of ship teases that didn't go anywhere. Mac and Harm finally got together and ended up married in the series finale, only to bring them back in NCIS: Los Angeles for fans to discover that their marriage was over. It was teased that they might be reunited in the future, but after all this time, why bother?

3. Kurt and Blaine - Glee

Kurt and blaine glee
Kurt and Blaine were an iconic couple who was very easy to love. However, when it was revealed that Blaine cheated on Kurt, it changed everything. The two did end up getting married, but the relationship felt tainted after Blaine's infidelity.

4. Doug and Carrie - King of Queens

Doug and carrie king of queens
King of Queens was a comedy about Doug and Carrie's married life. They decided to get a divorce right before they're notified that they could adopt a baby from Beijing. Doug and Carrie wound up racing each other to China to claim their child, but eventually realized they were being stupid. They remained married and even had another baby together, but there was way too much unnecessary drama.

5. Chloe and Alek - The Nine Lives of Chloe King

Chloe and alek the nine lives of chloe king
When The Nine Lives of Chloe King got canceled, Chloe was torn between Brian and Alek. The writers wrote a movie script to serve as an end to the series, but the network decided not to produce it. The script was posted online to give fans a sense of closure, and Chloe realized she was in love with Alek. The only problem is that we never got to see their beautiful ending.

6. Jace and Clary - Shadowhunters

Jace and clary shadowhunters
In the series finale, Clary lost all her memories of the Shadow World, which included falling in love with Jace. It was implied in the show's final moments that Jace and Clary would wind up together again, but it was too open-ended for our liking.

Fans Shove These Lead Characters Right Out of the Spotlight

The main character isn't always the one that steals the hearts of the viewers.

More often than not, leads get completely ignored for secondary characters that fans find to be more interesting.

In some cases they're right, but we think there's a handful of leads who deserve much more attention.

Check out our list of lead characters that fans tend to shove out of the spotlight!

spotlight

John Nolan - The Rookie

Nolan Tries To Help - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 9

Listen, we love Tim Bradford as much as the next person, but there's no reason that Nolan shouldn't get the same amount of love and attention from viewers.

Nolan is a passionate and groundbreaking character who broke out of his shell and moved across the country to make a difference. He didn't let his age stop him from following his dream, which is to make the world a safer place.

John Nolan has the biggest heart in existence, and while the show does an excellent show at portraying it, he is too frequently overshadowed by other characters in the eyes of the fans.

Clary Fray - Shadowhunters

claryfray

Clary had a fan base, but it was relatively small compared to the love fans had for the other characters.

The other characters were groundbreaking for obvious reasons, and all the attention they got was well-deserved. But we can't help but wish that Clary received a bit more attention from viewers.

She's one of the most adorable and loveable Shadowhunters in existence.

Joe and Spencer - Ballers

ballers

Joe and Spencer used to make a great team, but recently they've been on two separate paths.

Although they are the two main characters of the show, Ballers chose to put them at odds, which negatively impacted the quality of the series.

We're ready to shove them out of the spotlight personally, simply because the B storylines are better than watching Joe and Spencer destroy their relationship and continue with their individual and dull storylines.

Oliver Queen - Arrow

oliver queen

The more the show goes on, the less it starts to feel about the Green Arrow, and the more it starts to feel about his team of heroes.

While his team was epic and deserved all kinds of love, it's hard not to miss the days where Oliver and his story was at the heart and soul of the series.

Lately, everyone seems to care about the new additions more than the man who started it all.

Ted Mosby - How I Met Your Mother

mosby

Ask any How I Met Your Mother fans if they liked Ted Mosby, and odds are, they'll say no. Even though Ted was the main character and the entire show was about his journey to find love, most viewers found him entitled and annoying.

As one of the very few Ted fans in the country, Ted's quirky personality was integral to the series, and the sitcom would have been nothing without him.

What would we do without Ted and his red cowboy boots to lead the way?

Jax - Pandora

jax

Jax has always been central to the plot of Pandora, but most fans can collectively agree that the characters around her are becoming much more interesting than she ever was.

Jax may be the lead, but it appears that her current purpose is to get everyone around her killed.

We understand why other characters are more beloved, in this situation.

Nancy Drew - Nancy Drew

Facing the Truth - Nancy Drew Season 1 Episode 8

Nancy Drew is another character who deserves more love in general.

Nancy Drew was a beloved book series by many, but The CW character isn't being spoken about as much as she needs to be.

This girl can kick ass with nothing but a flashback, and the internet is still staying silent about her. Give Nancy Drew more love in 2020!

Max Goodwin - New Amsterdam

All Alone - Tall - New Amsterdam Season 2 Episode 8

Max Goodwin is the best medical director New Amsterdam has ever had.

He constantly puts the needs of the patients over his health, and continued to work at the hospital when he was in the late stages of throat cancer.

He's not as much overshadowed by others, as he is ignored by fans altogether. Max Goodwin deserves much more appreciation and attention than he's given.

Kate Kane - Batwoman

batwoman

We know that Kate is new to the whole superhero thing, but the amount of mistakes she's made is getting out of hand.

She let her twin sister get away with far too many things, and Kate isn't connecting well with the audience.

Kate's step-sister, and even the grouchy, but loveable tech back-up Luke, get more love from fans than Batwoman herself does.

Archie Andrews - Riverdale

Archie Fights - Riverdale Season 4 Episode 9

It's far too easy to forget that Archie is the main character of Riverdale. Veronica, Cheryl, Betty, and Jughead all stand out and add much more to the plot than he does.

Archie isn't an unlikeable character, but he also isn't able to capture the audience the way that the rest of the characters can.

When Archie is talked about by fans, it's usually about his relationship status, rather than his personality.

Liz Ortecho - Roswell, New Mexico

Who Are You? - Roswell, New Mexico

Liz Ortecho is the heart and soul of Roswell, New Mexico.

Her brilliant brain has solved more problems than we can count, and her strength and passion drives her forward in a way that we can't help but admire.

Most fans sleep on her and give all their love to the other characters, but there's enough to go around!

Wil Ohmsford - The Shannara Chronicles

wil

Wil wasn't a bad character, but he was very easily overshadowed by Amberle and Eretria.

Fans nicknamed the pairing "Princess Rover," and while Wil was supposed to be at the head of the love triangle, most fans ended up shipping his co-stars together.

We're with fans on this one. Amberle and Eretria were the superior pairing.

Scott McCall - Teen Wolf

mccall

Everyone loved and appreciated Scott Mccall, no question. But most Teen Wolf fans cared much more about Stiles than they did the main character.

Stiles did steal the show, and the final season was horrible without him, so we can't blame fans for loving Stiles above all else.

However, the series was at its best when Scott and Stiles were fighting the supernatural together, and they both deserve incredible amounts of praise for making the show one of the best of the decade.

Riley Matthews - Girl Meets World

riley matthews

Riley Matthews was overshadowed by her co-star so often, that viewers began to wonder if her best friend, Maya, was truly the girl in the title of Girl Meets World.

If we're being honest, Maya was a far more interesting character than Riley, but it was Riley's show at the end of the day.

Riley Matthews was a ball of sunshine that at least deserved an equal amount of love and praise as the rest of the characters received.

It's your turn, TV Fanatics!

13 TV Episodes to Watch in Preparation of the Super Bowl!

TV show characters? They're just like us.

They fall in love, get their hearts broken, battle intergalactic creatures and obviously gather round with their loved ones for the Big Game. But with the Super Bowl being such a significant national moment — a "holy" day if you will — TV shows don't seem to be capitalizing on it too much.

There's the usual fight for who will score the most coveted post-Super Bowl slot — one that comes with a large number of viewers. This year, the honor goes to This Is Us as they undoubtedly reveal the series' biggest mystery: the death of Jack Pearson.

But, as far as episodes simply celebrating the Super Bowl? Those a few and far between.

We've dug up some of our favorite Super Bowl-themed episodes that will allow you to kick back with your buddies and get pumped for Sunday. You'll enjoy these, no matter what team you're rooting for.  Warning: one of them will even make you sob uncontrollably.

1. This Is Us - That'll Be the Day (2018)

This is us thatll be the day
I'll start with the most recent episode of This Is Us. Jack and Rebecca geared up for their final Super Bowl with the Big Three before they leave for college. But, instead of familial bonding, the day is filled with fights and teenage angst. Eventually, the teens all chose to watch the game elsewhere. The episode ends with a fire at the Pearson household, which we know inevitably leads to Jack's death. The continuation of this horrible, terrible, no good, very bad episode airs RIGHT after this Sunday's Super Bowl so please, have your Terrible Towels ready.

2. Everybody Loves Raymond - Super Bowl (2001)

Everybody loves raymond super bowl 2001
Ray discovers he's getting sent to cover the Super Bowl. He invites Gianni, which doesn't sit well with Debra. Or the other family members. She gives him hell and when he realizes everyone else brought their wives, he flies her out, which makes things even worse. Point of the story? If you get Super Bowl tickets, always bring your wife, your dad, or your brother!

3. Full House - Super Bowl Funday (1995)

Full house super bowl funday 1995
Taking it back to the good ole' Full House days! Joey returns home from a two-week comedy tour to watch the Super Bowl with the fam. Those plans are derailed when he realizes he promised to take Michelle's class on a museum tour. In an attempt not to miss the game, he and Jesse bring the kids to a bar, but when the TVs break down, they invite everyone back to the house, interrupting DJ's study session.

4. The Simpsons - Sunday, Cruddy Sunday (1999)

The simpsons sunday cruddy sunday 1999
The Simpsons have plenty of Super Bowl TV episodes to choose from, but I'll go with 'Sunday, Cruddy Sunday' in which Homer and some pals score tickets to the Super Bowl. The good times come to a halt when they are told their tickets are counterfeit. Bart devises a plan to sneak in but as you'd imagine, sneaking into such a prestigious event isn't as easy as it seems.

5. Seinfeld - The Label Maker (1995)

Seinfeld the label maker 1995
Jerry realizes that he has a wedding the same day as the Super Bowl so he gifts his tickets to Whatley, his dentist. Then the worst possible thing happens: the wedding is called off. Jerry tries to get his tickets back, but Whatley already invited Newman and then later, Elaine. Does he ever re-gift the tickets back to Jerry?

6. Boy Meets World - The Eskimo (1998)

Boy meets world the eskimo 1998
In an attempt to teach them a valuable lesson, Mr. Feeney assigns Corey, Topanga and Shawn an impossible homework assignment: score tickets to the Super Bowl. The trio eventually learn the lesson and pass the life-test but not before a handful of shenanigans ensue.

Unique and Creative Date Ideas From Some Of Our Favorite TV Couples

Date planning can be super stressful.

But not every date has to be at that fancy French restaurant with the super pricey snails.

The whole point of a date is to spend time with someone and get to know them better. This is true in television too.

Creative Dates Collage Photo - Once Upon a Time

Some of the best television dates involved someone getting a little creative. Okay, so sometimes they had to break the bank, but not always. In any case, some of these dates would be very fun.

So let's take a cue from the couples of television and see what some of the most creative dates they've gone on were.

1) Puck and Quinn - Glee - Babysitting

Lullaby Time: Glee Style Season 1 Episode 11

When a pregnant Quinn invited Puck to babysit with her on Glee Season 1 Episode 11, she was testing whether or not he was daddy material. This is something that a lot of couples (or almost couples) think about.

And even if having a baby is so far from what you're thinking about right now, there is no better way to test the teamwork dynamic than trapping yourself in a house of little monsters.

Or, if you already have some monsters of your own, staying in together and singing a song to them might be all the bonding you need. Scratch that. Parents need date night away from the kids.

But those in pre-parent bliss might enjoy playing family for a night. If nothing else, you'll learn a little about your partner and yourself.

And the best part, if the kids really are monsters, is that when the night is over, you get to hand them off to someone else.

2) Rose and Fredrick Dean - Hart of Dixie - Bluebell Battle

Rose Hattenbarger- Race and Relationship - Hart of Dixie Season 1 Episode 20

Babysitting isn't the only way to test teamwork. Getting together for a competition can be a fun way to bond. It's a low-key way to get to know somebody.

Hart of Dixie Season 1 Episode 20 introduced fans to the Bluebell Battle: a wacky townwide race with various challenges and obstacles. Rose's Hattenbarger's first date with her crush Frederick Dean had them teaming up and competting together.

It was tame enough for her mom to approve of, but as Zoe tried to convince Rose, a lot can happen in the heat of the moment when you're trying to win a game.

The adrenaline rush that comes with trying to win can lead to another kind of adrenaline rush. And if you want to leave early and find a quiet spot together like Rose and Frederick Dean did, that's an option too.

3) Rory and Jess - Gilmore Girls - Basket Bid

Jess/Dean/Rory Bid a Basket - Gilmore Girls Season 2 Episode 13

Bluebell isn't the only town with wacky traditions that lead to great first dates. Rory and Jess (and Luke and Lorelai) went on a picnic on Gilmore Girls Season 2 Episode 13. But the fun part was that the picnic basket was one Rory filled with "food" and that Jess bid money on.

So, the idea of purchasing a date is a little antiquated. But a harmless picnic auction can be fun if you don't take it too seriously.

Rory and Jess ate their meal on the bridge. Then they went for pizza because the picnic lunch was disgusting. They ended their date shopping for books, which is a good date for anybody.

(I feel compelled to mention that Hart of Dixie Season 2 Episode 9 also featured a basket auction, pairing up Zoe and Wade, Lavon and Lemon, Shelby and Brick, and George and Tansy. If you want to take Tansy and George's lead, you can complete your meal by stealing a dog.)

4) Alison and Scott - Teen Wolf - The Woods

Scott Alison Woods Birthday - Teen Wolf Season 1 Episode 5

If you're willing to steal a dog, maybe you'd be up for ditching school? I'm kidding, of course; I would never advocate ditching. But on a serious show like Teen Wolf where everything is life and death, it was nice to see the teens blow off some steam.

They ditched and headed to the woods for Alison's birthday on Teen Wolf Season 1 Episode 5. I don't know why the woods, but surprisingly, nothing sinister happens to them there. They just goof off and have fun.

So, this date isn't really good if you are one for creature comforts, but if you like nature, by all means, adjourn to the woods.

5) Alex and Marissa - The O.C. - The Tide Changing/The Beach

Alex Marissa Tide Changing Ritual

If you're into those nature dates, how about something on the beach? Alex has a tradition of going to watch the tide change to signal a major change in her life. On The O.C. Season 2 Episode 12, that change was Marissa Cooper.

I don't think anyone was surprised when Marissa and Alex's first date wound up being on Valentine's Day, despite Alex's earlier protests. Including Marissa in her ritual was the perfect way to start off this relationship.

It was a big change for both of them and they marked it by kissing on the beach just as the tide changed.

Nightime beaching could be romantic, but even a fun beach day could be a nice day. Do it O.C. style!

6) Catherine and Vincent - Beauty and the Beast - Hotel Pool

Catherine Vincent Pool Date - Beauty and the Beast Season 1 Episode 20

If you aren't one for the outdoors but you like to swim, maybe go to a local pool for a date. This is what Vincent and Catherine did on Beauty and the Beast Season 1 Episode 21.

Somehow, on television, people seem to get the pool more or less all to themselves. I don't know how they do this, but going to a hotel pool instead of a public one might help a little.

Funnily enough, the whole point was to be out in the world like a normal couple 000instead of the anti-social couple they have to be due to Vincent's secret. Still, once they got in the water, it was clear these two didn't have eyes for anyone but each other.

7) Lucy and Wyatt - Timeless - Undercover Double Date

Lucy and Wyatt and Bonnie and Clyde Double Date - Timeless Season 1 Episode 9

Sometimes you want other people there with you for a date, hence the famous double date. A double date has a little less pressure.

At least it would if you weren't doubling with a dynamic duo of infamous bank robbers. Then again, maybe those bank robbers are the very reason for this date. Lucy and Wyatt found themselves doubling with Bonnie and Clyde as they tried to maintain their cover as a couple on Timeless Season 1 Episode 9.

Of course, not everybody has a time machine. Not everybody can go on a double date with Bonnie and Clyde. (Incidentally, if you do have a time machine, going on a double date in the past might risk the timeline)

But if your life involves some undercover craziness, doubling with some criminals might be right up your alley.

It worked out pretty well for Lucy and Wyatt, after all. I mean, being married was all kinds of fake at the time, but the sparks from that kiss were pretty real.

8) Lois and Clark - Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman - Cabin Stakeout

Clark Lois 2x13 L&C

Even if you are on an undercover type mission, sometimes the date is real.

Nothing says "Let's get to know each other better," like a good old fashioned stakeout.

Lois and Clark's first date plans fall through when they are stuck staking out a person of interest on Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Season 2 Episode 13. That does not stop them from getting cosey with a little wine as they watch the POI from a cabin.

The thrill of a stakeout mixed with the coziness of a cabin, plus your date takes off his shirt? What could be better?

9) Buffy and Spike- Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Car Stakeout and a Flask

Buffy Spike A Date? - Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Stakeouts don't always work out. Sometimes you're trapped in a car with a vampire who has the hots for you.

What was worse for Spike's idea of a date on Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 5 Episode 14? Him singing a Ramones hit, or offering her a flask of bourbon?

But if it isn't an obsessed vampire and is, in fact, someone you can actually stand, using a stakeout as a way to bond can be good.

Sure, it's no cosey cabin, but people can get plenty cosey in a car. After you chase down your perp, you can make-out a little bit.

10) Neal and Emma - Once Upon A Time - Breaking into An Amusement Park

Emma Neal Amusement Park - Once Upon a Time Season 3 Episode 22

Cops and reporters and bringers of justice can stakeout until the cows come home, but criminals need love too. How about a date that involves breaking in somewhere?

Hear me out. I'm not suggesting breaking windows and making off with merchandise. While I imagine that would have its thrill, I'm thinking a more low-key crime like Neal and Emma committed in a flashback on Once Upon a Time Season 3 Episode 22. Breaking into an amusement park. Picking a lock and turning on the lights.

You'd have to know how to get the lights on, but just hanging out on a carousel drinking coffee with your date could be really chill with a side of thrill.

It's how Emma and Neal started, and look where they ended up? Okay, bad example.

11) Charles and Liza - Younger - Riding a Carousel

Charles Liza Seaglass Carousel - Younger Season 5 Episode 8

If you're a stickler for the rules, come to the amusement park during opening hours and pay for it. In this case, not only do you get to sit on the pretty ponies, you get to ride them.

If you want something exceptional, you can go to the Seaglass Carousel in Battery Park. That's fish instead of horses. They look like they are made of Seaglass, shimmering as they do.

Riding the Seaglass Carousel is described as an under-the-sea garden experience. But the real experience? Holding hands with your date under the table like Charles and Liza when they went on this beautiful ride on Younger Season 5 Episode 8.

12) The Doctor and Rose - Doctor Who - The End Of The World ... From A Distance

Doctor and Rose "We Had Chips." - Doctor Who

Again, unless you have a time machine, this one is kind of hard. You can't exactly go five billion years in the future and watch the world be consumed by the sun safely from a space station platform as Rose and The Doctor did on Doctor Who Season 1 Episode 2..

However, there's a lot in the universe that we can see here and now. If you can go to a space station and observe a major event from a safe distance, that would be a pretty cool date, time travel or no.

And afterward, you can get french fries. Or chips, as Rose would say.

13) Eleanor and Chidi - The Good Place - A Mailroom Outside The Good Place

Eleanor Chidi Date - The Good Place Season 3 Episode 11

You what's harder to get to than the future? The Good Place.

Having a picnic outside The Good Place s pretty unlikely as long as we're alive (and possibly even after we're dead). That's all theology though, and that is not why we're here. We're here for dates, even impossible ones, apparently.

Chidi and Eleanor try to find a distraction on The Good Place Season 3 Episode 11. They enjoy each other while waiting things out in the mailroom outside The Good Place. So we have something impromptu and a mailroom while awaiting a major life-changing ruling.

If you have a major legal decision coming up, a nice picnic in a waiting area might help to ease your nerves. Making the best of a bad situation is part of why creative dates exist.

14) Lorelai and Jason - Gilmore Girls - The Supermarket

Jason Lorelai Supermarket Date - Gilmore Girls

Speaking of making the best of a bad situation, if a fancy restaurant doesn't work out, and takeout is rejected, you may find yourself hungry on a date. This is unacceptable.

When faced with this very situation on Gilmore Girls Season 4 Episode 9, Jason and Lorelai dashed into a supermarket and assembled a variety of prepared and pre-packaged foods. Then they settled down to eat them.

We may not ship Lorelai with Jason (because who does?) but you can't deny that this date was a creative and clever solution and adorable to boot.

It isn't the sort of thing one would plan, but sometimes ending up at a store in the middle of the night can be just the whimsical sort of date you need.

15) Kat and Adena - The Bold Type - The Airport

Kat Adena 1x09 Airport Date - The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 9

When it comes to impromptu dates, this was one of the better ones. Because being stuck somewhere with someone can be a blessing in disguise. And aren't airports fun?

You have gift shops and food, and you can make a pillow fort. I repeat, A PILLOW FORT! Does it get better than a pillow fort?

Hopefully, visa problems never force you into the situation Adena's was in on The Bold Type Season 1 Episode 9, but if you have a night before you leave the country, what better way to spend that time than on a date? And if it's stuck at the airport, so be it.

16) West and Claire - Heroes - Sitting on The Hollywood Sign

West Claire Hollywood Sign - Heroes Season 2 Episode 4

If your life is a little more science-fiction than you're willing to admit to us, then a plane isn't the only way to fly.

West flew Claire up onto the Hollywood Sign for their first date on Heroes Season 2 Episode 4. Can you imagine being up high like that and looking down on everything? And to get to be up there and just hang out with a cute boy?

In the real world, touching the Hollywood Sign is not allowed, but you can take a nice hike in Griffin Park and find yourself up and above that location.

It's hard not to be jealous that Claire got to do this off-limits thing. I guess if your boyfriend can fly, the sky is literally the limit, but there is something to be said for high-up, off-limits spaces. Maybe a nice rooftop could do the trick.

17) Nathan and Haley - One Tree Hill - Lingerie Shopping

Nathan/Haley Scavenger Hunt - One Tree Hill Season 1 Episode 8

It isn't only boys with superpowers who can pull out all the stops. Okay, so technically, Brooke was the one who planned the whole thing for Nathan and Haley on One Tree Hill Season 1 Episode 8. Go Brooke!

Having a friend plan a scavenger hunt date could be great. It can encourage you to spend time sharing secrets and having a romantic dinner.

Or it could be awkward because the most creative part of this date was buying sexy clothing for your date at a lingerie store.

Depending on what kind of couple you are, this can turn out kinky or adorkable. (It's adorkable because you feel awkward and buy socks).

There is nothing wrong with getting a little kinky and no reason not to do so proudly. Buying clothing and sharing secrets are great ways to express that you care about someone. Not to mention, get to know someone. Isn't that what dating is all about?

18) Jane and Ryan - The Bold Type - Sex Club

Jane Ryan Sex Club - The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 4

Buying lingerie might be a little on the kinky side, but going to a sex club? That brings the kink up to an 11!

Going somewhere that takes you out of your comfort zone can be scary. If you have to do it, what better way to do it than with a partner? Especially if partnering is the whole point.

Jane and Ryan both felt awkward about the whole thing on The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 4, though their reasons were different. They made it work for them though.

And hey, you don't have to do anything you don't want to do. But nobody can deny this was a creative date night for Janestripe.

19) Rachel and Ross- Friends - The Laundremat

Ross Rachel Date Laundry - Friends Season 1 Episode 5

Sometimes it isn't about buying clothes or taking them off. Sometimes it's about washing them.

It doesn't get more low-key than going to do your laundry together. If you are either half of Roschel on Friends Season 1 Episode 5, you might not even know that it is a date ... at least until Chandler points it out.

Still, there is something sweetly domestic about it. Doing laundry can be such a chore, but if you go with someone who you like to talk to then it can be a great time.

And if you're lucky like Ross, it might end in a first kiss. And, you know, a headache.

20) Ted and Stella - How I Met Your Mother - 2 Minute Date

Stella Ted 2 Minute Date - How I Met Your Mother Season 3 Episode 13

If you have trouble even finding time to do your laundry, you probably don't have time for dinner and a movie. Unless you plan it just right the way Ted did on How I Met Your Mother Season 3 Episode 13.

And by plan it just right, we mean pay a waitress to set up a table and bite-sized snacks outside your date's work. Then set television in a store window with a highlight reel for a movie less than a block away. Or something like that.

Keep it short and sweet, fitting in little samples of all the best date cliches. It won't be much, but if someone only has two minutes for lunch ...

21) Catherine and Gabe - Beauty and the Beast - Cake Decorating

Catherine Gabe Cake Decorating - Beauty and the Beast Season 2 Episode 21

If you have more than five minutes, you might have time to plan something elaborate. And if your date is stuck on a gift for a friend, this date will be perfect for you.

It isn't dinner, but you can eat it. It's fun and creative and let's you be artistic for the night. And who doesn't love cake?

If you can find a place near you that'll let you decorate a cake, I'd say that sounds like a pretty fun date.

And hopefully, you aren't faking the whole thing like Catherine was with Gabe on Beauty and the Beast Season 2 Episode 21, not that we can blame her given the circumstances.

22) Leonard and Penny - The Big Bang Theory - Shooting Range

Penny Leonard Gun Date - The Big Bang Theory Season 5 Episode 14

Another great place to go to is a shooting range. You have to be sure you know how to shoot a gun as it is no joke, but tons of people enjoy the experience.

Part of what made this date so great was that Leonard went out of his way to find out what Penny likes on The Big Bang Theory Season 5 Episode 14. It wasn't something he would do on his own, but he knew doing something she liked would make her happy. And as it turns out, Penny likes guns!

Presumably, they make sure that it's safe, though feel free to check out the particulars before booking some time.

23) August and Emma - Once Upon A Time - Watering Hole

August Emma Watering Hole - Once Upon a Time Season 1 Episode 13

This one is completely free but may take a fair bit of planning. Find a watering hole like August did on Once Upon A Time Season 1 Episode 13.

That's right, an actual watering hole; you might also call it a well. How's that for creative?

Again, do your research. Make sure the water is safe and scope out the spot.

But if you ask a girl to get a drink and then take her to a well, you can't deny she'll be surprised and perhaps even charmed.

So, we have a lot of different ideas here, but I think the main thing is finding a fun way to spend some time together. Are there any you want to try? Are there any we didn't think of? Let us know in the comments.

Does Lucy Hale Have What It Takes to Carry a Show? Maybe Not.

I'd like to start by saying that I have always been a fan of Lucy Hale. She was the main reason I tuned into Pretty Little Liars all those years ago.

Before her breakout role as Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, Hale had a few memorable credits.

She was Robin Scherbatsky's little sister Katie on How I Met Your Mother Season 2 Episode 12, Justin's goth girlfriend Miranda on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place and Lena Kaligaris's little sister Effie on Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants 2.

Lucy Hale Show Collage - Pretty Little Liars

Hale was even a member of the main cast on two short-lived series: The CW's Privledged and Bionic Woman. She had one of those faces that you felt like you had seen somewhere, even if you couldn't place it. She felt like someone famous.

And when she became Aria Montgomery on ABCfamily's Pretty Little Liars, she became a household name. Aria was one of four leads on Pretty Little Liars, which was an ensemble show. She was one of four reasons for tuning in, one of five after Alison came back from the dead.

Aria In Trouble - Pretty Little Liars

After Pretty Little Liars ended, people were excited to see what those girls would do next. Shay Mitchell has arguably been the most successful, scoring roles on Netflix's You and Hulu's Dollface.

Ashley Benson has a few movies in post-production to come out in 2020. Troian Bellisario has done a few projects such as Feed, in which she both produced and starred. After Mitchell, Bellisario seems to have been the most successful post-Pretty Little Liars.

And of course Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish stared in the short lived Spin-Off to the original series: PLL: The Perfectionists.

Pretty Little Liars Spinoff Cast - The Perfectionists

After Pretty Little Liars, Hale was in a few movies, and that could have been her new path, but it seems she wanted to remain on the small screen. So she took the role of Stella Abbott on the CW's Life Sentence,

Life Sentence centered on a girl with a death sentence (cancer) who had been living like there was no tomorrow, only to discover that she was cured and was now sentenced to life. Clever, right? The show was too.

I thoroughly enjoyed Life Sentence. But apparently, I was one of few. It did badly in the ratings. News of the show's cancelation after just one season was met with disappointment, particularly by Hale herself.

While Hale had been one of many main characters on Pretty Little Liars, Life Sentence was her first time as the lead. She was the protagonist, not to mention the narrator of that drama, and for whatever reason, the performance she was giving was not enough for people to keep tuning in.

Suddenly Cured - Life Sentence

Hale's next attempt to lead a series was the Riverdale Spin-Off Katy Keene. Katy Keene showcases four twenty-something New York hopefuls, trying to make it in music (Josie McCoy), Broadway/Drag (Jorge Lopez), fashion (Katy Keene) and conning her way to legitimate business (Pepper Potts).

Many felt the show should have been focused on Josie as fans already knew her from Riverdale and had been foaming at the mouth fo Josie-centric stories for years. Her journey on Katy Keene is a difficult yet compelling one, and she is a difficult yet compelling character.

Jorge, who nobody who watched Riverdale would be familiar with, was an instant sensation among the fans. As Katy said, "You'll be obsessed with him." Jorge's story is one so rarely told yet so applicable to today's society. He's also just a very dynamic personality that you want to know more about.

We're learning more about Pepper, but it's hard to root for or even care about her when you don't understand her. And then there is Katy. Were it not for the mystery that is Pepper Potts, Katy Keene would be the least popular character in her own series.

A Kiss Before Engagement? - Katy Keene Season 1 Episode 2

Katy doesn't have the appeal that Josie and Jorge have. Her life seems bizarrely charmed in a "my perfect boyfriend proposes to me on Katy Keene Season 1 Episode 1 , and then I get to stay friends with him and sleep with a Prince" kind of way.

She's not unlikable exactly, but not as interesting as most of her friends. This wouldn't be a problem if not for the fact that this is her show.

As of today, Katy Keene has neither been renewed nor canceled fo Season 2. According to The TV Ratings Guide, it is the lowest in the ratings of all WB produced CW shows and will likely only get renewed because the CW has been disregarding ratings of late when making renewal decisions.

Of course, some actors get lucky and do great on a long show and then never really strike that kind of gold again through no fault of their own. Sarah Michelle Geller and Alexis Bledel come to mind. Even coming off a big success, getting a show renewed is not easy.

Holding Pattern - Katy Keene

But in the case of Hale, she had two shows that never made it out of Season 1, then she struck gold playing Aria for seven years, and has been unable to keep a show afloat since.

Life Sentence was a great show that didn't deserve to get canceled, and Katy Keene should have better ratings than it does, but the Katy character is what drags it down.

And these were the two shows where Hale was the lead. She should be propping them up. Instead, we'e left wondering, is Hale the problem?

In the case of Life Sentence, the show was a little old-school, retreading plots and cliches that were a little 1990s. Beyond that, the premise had an expiration date in the same way The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt did.

That girl can only be a clueless fish-out-of-water for so long. Eventually, she either adapts or is just too stupid for it to make sense.

Katy and Josie - Katy Keene Season 1 Episode 1

As for Katy Keene, a lot of viewers probably tuned in because they liked Riverdale, and Katy Keene is no Riverdale. It is the lightest and simplest of the shows in Greg Berlanti's empire.

Also, fans have wanted some solo-Josie time for so long that it would take a character as dynamic as Jorge to steal her spotlight. Whoever got cast as Katy would have had an uphill battle.

Lucy Hale is a talented actress and singer, but it seems like maybe she keeps picking the wrong projects. She needs something that will showcase her skills while focusing on an audience that wants to see her. Maybe The CW simply isn't the best platform for her.

Whatever the reason, a Lucy Hale lead show might not be the best investment of your time unless you're okay with it not making it to Season 2.

What do you think?

Is it Hale's fault her shows keep flopping?

Should she try piloting shows on another network?

Will Katy Keene see a Season 2?

Funny Shows That Were Dramatically Honest About Death

If a show is considered funny, irreverent, or just plain goofy, its dramatic contributions to the TV landscape are often overlooked.

It can be risky for shows reliant on comedy to tackle serious subjects, like death, because when it goes wrong, it falls into after-school-special territory.

When it's done well, though, the treatment of the subject has resulted in some of TV's most moving and honest moments.

Grief Collage

Take Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist as an example. The big draw of the show is the fact it's a musical comedy.  To the show's credit, it consistently executes big musical numbers in a fun way.

Who is going to forget Lauren Graham and Renee Elise Goldsberry's sing-off on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 10 any time soon?

However, what makes Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, a compelling watch is its exploration of death, grief, and loss.

Simon's alienation from everyone because of his grief for his dad and Maggie being overwhelmed while making funeral arrangements on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 1 Episode 11 are handled with care and come across as truthful.

Characters breaking out into song, like the cemetery patrons singing "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place," add to the honesty of the depiction because the songs articulate the emotional truth of the situation.

Overwhelmed Maggie - Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Even though the premise of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is unrealistic, how the Clarkes and company mourn the loss of their loved ones is very relatable.

Whereas it was somewhat surprising to find out Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist was delving into these topics, The Unicorn was always upfront about being a series centered around what happens after someone you loved passes away.

With its premise of a guy becoming a chick magnet because he's widower, The Unicorn gave itself the tough task of being funny without being disrespectful.

On the comedy front, it's hit or miss. The instances of the show taking Wade's -- the titular Unicorn -- grief and his struggle to cope with the changes to his life seriously are the times when the show shines.

The Unicorn Season 1 Episode 3 is a good illustration of this. The episode is about Wade's friends pressuring him to join a support group because they think he has anger issues.

The Hottest Single Guy - The Unicorn Season 1 Episode 1

It's a lackluster episode until Wade takes the group's leader words to heart and expresses his anger about his wife's death.

The scene is beautifully handled because of Walton Goggins' performance and the script's candor about the unfairness of losing the person you thought you would be spending the rest of your life with.

The Unicorn also does a good job of knowing how to far to push the dramatics without making the audience miserable.

For some, Futurama Season 5 Episode 2 crossed that line. It's the episode where Fry finds the petrified remains of his dog, Seymour, and infamously ends with loyal Seymour waiting for Fry to come back.

The ending is brutal, but it does enhance the episode's message about letting go of your loved ones and the dangers of trying to bring them back to life even if the technology is available.

Seymour Waits - Futurama

Of course, getting to that point is a long, arduous journey, which Dan and Ella discovered during Lucifer Season 4.

As irreverent as Lucifer is, the show wisely realized Dan and Ella’s grief for Charlotte wasn’t something they could get over in an episode. Instead, the show let it play out throughout the entire season.

Lucifer also wasn’t afraid to show how grief can change people for the worse. Dan reverted to being a douche. Ella suffered a crisis of faith.

Hardly the most fun storyline, but it was necessary to show both Dan and Ella struggle with their grief for it to ring true when they found some measure of peace on Lucifer Season 4 Episode 10.

But how do you deal with the death of someone you had a contentious relationship with? That was the question Holt had to grapple with on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 7 when his arch-nemesis Madeline Wuntch passed away.

Teacher Holt - Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 10

What seemed like episode-long parody of the five stages grief became a moving meditation about how much Wuntch meant to Holt and the genuine sadness of knowing she isn’t around anymore.

Death is the ultimate blind slide, as Marshall found out on How I Met Your Mother Season 6 Episode 13. For most of the runtime, it was your typical How I Met Your Mother Episode. The gang found Barney’s doppelgänger. Robin was humiliated at work.

Then came the very last scene of Lily telling Marshall his dad passed away. Jason Segel masterfully conveyed the shock and devastation you feel upon finding out someone you loved passes away.

How I Met Your Mother’s controversial ending tarnished much of the series, but the scene of Marshall finding out his dad died is one of the few moments that isn’t tainted. It remains just as poignant and honest now as it did when it originally broadcast.

These funny shows weren’t afraid to take death seriously. Because of that, they’ve given audiences honest depictions about what it’s like to lose someone you love.

Battle of the Shows: Friends vs. How I Met Your Mother

The 2000s began with one sitcom apartment door closing and another one opening.

Friends was iconic in its heyday and is still quite popular. How I Met Your Mother aimed to take its place in the hearts of people watching television across the nation.

While different in premise, both shows were very popular and often compared. Our TV Fanatics Sarah Little and Leora Waltuch sat down to discuss which of the two was the superior sitcom.

Friends/How I Met Your Mother

Leora: Why do you think How I Met Your Mother is better than Friends?

Sarah: How I Met Your Mother, overall, told a better series-long story than Friends. From beginning to end, you knew that the endpoint was all about finding out who the mother was, and the journey that the show took us on was incredible.

There were hilarious moments, and heartbreaking ones, too. How I Met Your Mother perfectly juggled the funny with the sad. While there were funny jokes and running gags, there were also a lot of life lessons that could be taken away from many of the episodes.

Leora: You say it was better from start to finish, but one of the most controversial ends of a series in TV history is HIMYM. Personally, I actually liked the end and thought it worked, but that was not the majority opinion, which has to count for something.

Friends never pretended to be any more or less than what it was; a show about Friends. Friends was comfort food. It was about a time in your life when your friends are your family, and we felt like all six of them were family to us. They were welcome in our homes.

Friends Cast Image

HIMYM was based around a love story that half of the audience stopped rooting for a few seasons in. Robin/Ted fans lost faith after How I Met Your Mother Season 1 Episode 1, and Ted/Tracy fans felt betrayed.

Isn't a story about friendship and how it endures a stronger message than a story about love lost and unrequited?

And yes, HIMYM toed the line between funny and sad, but it also gave us some plotlines that were really hard to swallow, and I don't know that I want to be taking life lessons from people as damaged as most of the main characters.

I'd just like to add, while How I Met Your Mother was original and did make strides in the genre, it also built on tropes and dynamic that Friends created and made iconic.

Some believe that HIMYM is just a Friends rip-off, which I think is a big stretch, but you can't say it wasn't influenced by the show and didn't try to mimic certain things in order to build on its success.

How I met Your Mother Cast

Sarah: While I don't disagree that series finale of How I Met Your Mother was a letdown, that doesn't take away the greatness of every other episode before that. Two hundred and six out of 208 is not bad.

If I'm being honest, I ignore the series finale as canon altogether because that was not was the series was about. The series was never about Ted and Robin or Ted and the Mother, it was about the five friends, life and the beauty of it, and heartache.

So I strongly disagree that How I Met Your Mother was a story about love lost and unrequited, it was always about the relationship between Ted, Robin, Marshall, Lily, and Barney. And yes, the characters are damaged, but that's what makes them relatable.

HIMYM took what made Friends great and made it greater, in my opinion.

Or should I say, legendary?

Barney Stinson

Leora: The premise of the show, as told to the audience, was how Ted found love with the mother of his children. The writers intended it to be the story of a man moving on from losing his wife by reuniting with his first love.

Love was at the center of the whole thing. You can't say that the show wasn't about that.

Ted was the protagonist, and we watched his journey to find love. That's what drove the story.

The friendships mattered, but not in the same way they did in Friends, which was more about friendship than romantic love. Though Friends did have some great ships.

When it aired, everybody was rooting for Ross and Rachel to end up together, and the show delivered on that. Meanwhile, Monica and Chandler were a surprise love story that was healthy and genuine.

Chandler and Monica - Friends

Marshall and Lily were not bad, but they didn't have all the things Monica and Chandler had going for them. And most of the other relationships in HIMYM were hard to ship.

Barney and Robin were plain toxic (and for some reason, wildly popular).

Speaking of, let's talk about Barney.

He may have been a tragic figure who suffered quite a bit, but he was also sociopathic and manipulative.

He was horrible to women, and while he was a loyal and loving friend, Robin, Ted, and Lily all became corrupted and less tolerable, the longer they were friends with him, especially Robin. Not so much Marshal.

Marshall Eriksen

And while I'll agree that being a little damaged does make a person more relatable.

A) What I said was in response to what you said about taking life lessons

B) That's not usually what people are looking for in a sitcom. The friends of Friends were relatable enough without becoming unlikable characters of their former selves (I'm looking at you, Scherbatsky).

Sarah: That is true, it was all about how Ted met the mother of his future children. But I believe it morphed into something more as the seasons went on, and the show was all the better for it.

Yes, the series-long mystery about the mother was fantastic, but so was the story about the five friends.

How I met Your Mother Cast 2

Why can't it be both?

But you are right, at the end of the day it was about love, but it was the different kinds of love, from familial to romantic and everything in-between.

Friends was great at portraying friendships, but it wasn't as strong at portraying other relationships (besides Monica and Chandler, of course). But, it was a show called "Friends" after all.

I disagree. Marshall and Lily and Barney and Robin were great love stories, especially Marshall and Lily.

Barney was terrible to women, but so was Joey and Ross and sometimes Chandler. Let's face it, both these shows had highly problematic components to them.

David Schwimmer Promo Pic - Friends

And I don't agree with the statement that Barney corrupted them, they were all their own characters, and all made their own choices. They all went through their own arcs, and I feel like they all stayed pretty likable until the very end.

Leora: I never said Marshall and Lily weren't a great love story. They were. But they weren't as great as Monica and Chandler.

I think we didn't see them as much as their own people because they were already in a relationship when the show started. We saw Monica and Chandler individual of each other, we saw their friendship, and we saw their relationship bloom in a way that was so natural despite the fact that the writers never intended to go down that road.

As for Barney and Robin, I'm sorry, but I just can't see them as a great love story.

Actually, I take that back. For once in my life, I'm not sorry. They were terrible for each other.

Barney Robin Couple Picture

They worked really well as friends, but once they go together, they brought out each other's worst qualities. They were both running away from relationships and commitment, and instead of addressing that, they combined their issues into one mismatched relationship.

They didn't work at all the first time they got together, and they didn't last long either time. The writers knew that they were not a story meant to last, simply one that needed to be told to get to the wedding and the mother and to keep Robin off the market and away from Ted.

Truthfully, at that point in her life, Robin wasn't in a place to be in a relationship with anyone. She wanted to be independent, she didn't want kids or to settle down.

Ted wanted those things and Barney, and while he pretended otherwise, wanted them too. He'd had such a messed up childhood, and he just wanted to be loved and have a family, but he was afraid to want it.

I think it was clear that he wanted a more traditional life as the show went on and developed his character, and that never would have worked for Robin.

Robin Scherbatsky

She could have "fun" relationships, but a healthy, lasting, stable relationship wasn't something she was ready for until she "lived her life."

I liked Barney falling for Robin and discovering that he could love that way, but it never made sense for Robin to return his feelings. She opened him up to love, but he could have shared that love with Nora, who wanted what he wanted or even Quinn, who was a good match for him and never expressed not wanting a family.

Instead, he went back to someone who he said he loved because she was "almost as screwed up as I am," and who he not only constantly lied to but who when she asked him not to lie to her anymore, his response was, "You don't want me to lie to you? Lies are the reason that we're together."

He may have turned it into a grand romantic speech in the end, but how is a relationship that knowingly bases itself on lies remotely healthy?

And yes, Joey wasn't great to woman, neither was Ross, and even Chandler, but they were bad in a flawed human way.

Matt LeBlanc Promo Pic - Friends

There is a difference between being a flawed human an a sociopath. None of them set out to hurt and manipulate in the way that Barney did. He was incredibly toxic, and the way the show tries to normalize it because he is a good friend is a little sick.

There's also the timing to consider. When Friends came out, the "nice guy" trope wasn't a thing that was being called out yet. A lot of the un-PC things Friends did they did before it wasn't PC.

How I Met Your Mother came later and should have known better, but it was more offensive and crude than Friends ever was.

People are mostly okay with Joey's behavior, which is written off as being idiotic more than anything else. And yes, he is a player, but while he's with a woman, he's usually pretty sweet to her. He's the charming, not too bright actor who is more or less what he sells himself as.

He didn't create a book with a million ways to deceive women and trick them into bed. He doesn't have an answering machine that randomly calls girls and tells them he saw them, and they are fated to be together. He doesn't have a bed that magically sends girls who won't leave to who knows where.

Sarah: I actually would argue that Marshall and Lily were better than Monica and Chandler. We got to see Marshall and Lily together longer as they got engaged in the very first episode.

But, we also got to see the progression of how they got to that point through flashbacks, which were always epic by the way. I feel like we kind of got it all with them. But, Monica and Chandler are also amazing.

I completely disagree, Barney and Robin constantly made the other one better, even when they were just friends. They were pretty much the same person and pretty compatible if you ask me.

Of course, the first time they got together, it was too soon, and they weren't ready for it. But once they grew as individuals, they were ready for the serious commitment.

They were hot messes to start with, but I love both of their individual character arcs throughout the show and how they were sort of parallel with one another. No one person or one relationship is perfect, but they really did love one another, and that's all that matters.

Robin Barney 3

They did make Barney quite the dirtbag for comedies sake, yes.

How I Met Your Mother premiered one year after Friends ended, I would say the timing isn't that off. Friends was not that long ago, and timing excuses nothing, in my opinion. Let's just agree that there were problematic elements to both and leave it at that.

And I know a lot of people think How I Met Your Mother was this super crude show, but I don't believe it was worse than any other sitcom. It was just a bit more obvious about it.

Leora: Okay, we're getting into shipper wars now, so let's agree to disagree about Robin/Barney.

Moving on from that, I agree with you about Barney's character arc in the show. It was a great arc. But I can't say that I liked Robin's.

Robin Scherbatsky 2

I found her really likable in the early seasons, but later she became a kind of a caricature of herself. She was annoying, and her backstory was unrealistic, the more we learned about it.

I could buy the father who wanted a boy and literally raised her as one, forcing her to go in the wilderness on her birthday and survive, etc. And I can buy the teenage pop-star with the boyfriend's who treated her so horribly. But both of those are pretty outrageous, so for them to come together like that ... it was kind of hard to swallow.

And they kept trying to make her more and more outrageous for the sake of the laugh. In the beginning, she was this ambitious journalist from Canada who wasn't looking for a serious relationship.

As the show progressed, they drove everything to the extreme, from her tom-boy tendencies to her Canadian roots, which they were always making fun of. As a Canadaphile, I take offense to that.

Ted also went from a romantic if somewhat naive character to a character that nearly every fan found annoying. He's been called pretentious and accused of being a "nice guy." Plus, sometimes, he was kind of a stalker. And he was supposed to be the lead.

Ted Mosby

Marshall was likable throughout the show's run. he was pretty much the only character I liked from start to finish. But after a while, even the actor complained of being stuck in a role with no great character development left to him and wanted to leave the show.

To your earlier point about it being a show about five friends, yes, it was that, but it was also about how those friends and people, in general, can be super close at one point and then fall out of your life. They lost touch with a lot of people, and they lost touch with Robin for a long time.

I'm not saying the message is exactly inaccurate to the real world, but it isn't the warm hug that Friends was. You don't watch a sitcom to learn the harsh realities of the world, such as that whomever your friends are now, you'll probably grow apart at some point and won't even know what is going on in their lives.

Sarah: I mean, it's a sitcom. A lot of plot lines and character stories are created for the sake of comedy, and Robin's backstory worked to achieve that goal.

There were outrageous storylines on Friends too, particularly Phoebe's life, especially how she mugged Ross. Or that Ross and Monica were actually each other's first kiss.

Lisa Kudrow Promo Pic - Friends

But they are sitcoms, and they create outlandish scenarios to be funny.

I personally loved Ted from beginning to end, even if he got desperate for love at times. And you can say the same things that you said about Ted about Ross.

To be honest, I don't expect sitcoms to be rainbows and butterflies all the time, Friends was definitely not at times. I want there to be laughter, emotion, relatability, and all the things I look for in television shows.

Escapism is definitely a component that goes into watching television, but it's also about finding characters and stories that you can relate to.

Of course, you can't relate to a specific scenario Ted is going through in one episode, but you can relate to his feelings. And that's what I love about How I Met Your Mother because it had it all.

Friends Cast Photo

Leora: Fair enough.

I think the main points here, putting shipping and character likability aside, is that both were sitcoms of a similar breed. How I Met Your Mother built off Friends, and you can say it made it better, or you can say it stole what was there. It depends on how you want to look at it.

I feel like Friends went just far enough with the jokes and the outrageousness, where How I Met Your Mother went maybe a bit too far at times. But at the end of the day, with a sitcom, it's about what makes you laugh and makes you feel good.

It's about what makes you keep watching, buying DVDs, paying for overpriced streaming services to watch something you've seen a thousand times.

I actually enjoyed both shows, but personally, if I could only watch one of them ever again, I would pick Friends.

I think it really provided something that was needed, and it still does years later. I don't know if How I Met Your Mother will hold up the same way; only time will tell.

Friends Cast Pic

Funnily enough, while they were clearly trying to be the next Friends, I've heard people say that the show that was actually the next Friends in how a generation responded to it was The Big Bang Theory. And that's ironic because the group in that show was dysfunctional and horrible friends to each other.

But it's the fact that the term "the next Friends," is a thing that makes my point. Friends set the standard and are the standard, the gold standard as a certain CW couple would say. Nobody ever says, "this could be the next How I Met Your Mother."

The Friends formula worked well enough to be mimicked, but when they tried to make a "How I Met Your Father" show, it never got the green light.

And I guess, just personally, I relate more to a story about friendship with some love than a story about love with some friendship.

Monica and Chandler are the gold-standard couple because they naturally evolved from friends to more than in a healthy, relatable way.

Chandler Proposes - Friends

Marshall and Lily, great as they were, were always love-interests, even back when they met in college. It was contrived, and it came off that way.

How I Met Your Mother teaches that love doesn't have to make sense to make sense, but Friends teaches that the best relationships are rooted in friendship and take a lot of work.

Monica and Chandler never read each other's minds, and they didn't agree on everything the way Lily and Marshal did, but they were compatible, they cared about each other, and they put in the work to make their relationship happen.

Again, love Lily and Marshal, but the relationship was trying so hard to be more in love than the gold standard that they left the realm of reality behind, whereas Monica and Chandler are one of the few healthy and realistic relationships you see on television.

Courteney Cox Promo Pic - Friends

And that's in a sticom!

I'm getting into ships again. Sorry.

But the point of Friends was that true friends are always there for you, they will be your family and your important relationships. That's a good message, and it makes you feel good. I would love to have a friend group like in friends.

Sarah: They definitely are similar, which is why this is such a hot topic between fans everywhere! But I think they are very different in a lot of ways.

The main difference is that How I Met Your Mother is almost like a mystery show. Fans loved looking for clues and different hints as to who the mother was, and the reveal of her on How I Met Your Mother Season 8 Episode 24 was epic because it was so unexpected.

Tracy McConnel

Plus, most sitcoms nowadays are basically just about a group of friends and/or coworkers anyways, but we enjoy them individually still. I would argue that Friends was the "next Cheers" or the next "Golden Girls." There's always going to be a show prior to another that influenced it.

As for spin-offs, Joey didn't do that well either. How I Met Your Mother showed a lot of tension between their group of friends, and I would say that it also proved the importance of friendships and that they take a lot of work. There was just also the component of finding your soulmate too.

Leora: So you're saying the show was about the mystery of the mother, but a lot of people were let down with how the mother's plotline was handled. And again, she was barely in it.

I mean, you can go farther back with Friends to Carl Jungs 12 archetypes. But I think Friends was very original in how they put them together in an ensemble like that and had them mesh with each other. Friends defined the modern-day sitcom, and shows were always trying to mimic it.

And has anyone actually said that Friends was the next anything?

Sarah: I would argue that the Mother was in it throughout the whole series run, at least, her spirit was. The end goal was always about how Ted met Tracy. So once he met her, end of show.

And that is what happened.

Thankfully we were able to figure out who she was and see some of her backstory on How I Met Your Mother Season 9, which really helped to build her character. But I think people were more disappointed with her death than with how the show handled her overall story.

They did a great job of planting seeds and building up the mystery of who she was, and that is part of why the show was so enjoyable and is what set it apart from Friends.

I'm sure back when Friends first premiered, people who were die-hard Cheers fans thought it was a rip-off. I'm not saying it was, I'm just saying you could probably make that argument about anything.

Matthew Perry Promo Pic - Friends

There is no denying that Friends was an epic show that has stuck with a lot of people, and I believe that How I Met Your Mother deserves that same legacy. It lasted nine seasons, and a lot of people still love it as well.

Leora: Well reasoned.

I did like Tracy, and while her death was sad, the sort of dropped hints along the way, and the show actually made more sense when you reveal that the mother was dead the whole time.

It wasn't a bad show, and I did enjoy it, though I would never want to know any of those people or be friends with them in real life.

I think where Friends started out okay and got steadily better until it was something you couldn't stop watching, How I Met Your Mother had some really weak seasons, especially later on as the characters became less likable and less relatable.

Both were good for what they were, but I prefer one to the other because it's more in keeping with what I like. It's hilarious, but not over the top, it's a level of mature, but not crude, certain things are played for jokes, but it has the right balance of humor and realism for a half-hour sitcom.

I guess my argument isn't so much that How I Met Your Mother is bad, so much as it is that Friends is better. It was still as good by the end as it was in the beginning. More so. And we would have been happy to have it continue, though it's good they ended on a high note.

People are still clamoring for a revival to happen. They are always making those fake trailer on youTube.

And it was a big deal when Matthey Perry guest-starred on Courtney Cox's show and proposed to her.

We still want more Friends, and the ending left us with a good taste in our mouth. Like ice-cream, you can never have too much.

Sarah: Not even Marshall? Come on, you know you would want to be friends with Big Fudge!

Marshall Big Fudge

That aside, I think Friends had a couple of weak seasons as well, I can't even watch most of Friends Season 3.

And Friends Season 10 was lacking in some departments.

But I think that could be said about any show that goes on for that long. It can come down to a matter of taste with the Friends vs. How I Met Your Mother argument, and for some reason, How I Met Your Mother has stuck with me more.

I do love Friends, I just believe that How I Met Your Mother was funnier and more clever with how it handled its storylines. I also love how it handled the subject of death and life in general. It was the perfect balance for me.

I think Friends ended where it needed to because I feel like, after a certain number of seasons, a show overstays its welcome. A one-off reunion episode of Friends would be amazing, as would a re-imagining of the series finale of How I Met Your Mother.

Both shows were amazing overall, with a few bad parts to them, as is the case with the majority of television shows. I do believe that How I Met Your Mother was a more interesting show, though.

Leora: I'll give you the death thing. Marshal's father's passing was well-handled. It was one of their better arcs, and Friends never really did anything like that.

Most of their emotional episodes were relationship related, like break-ups. Though there was Phoebe having to give up the twins. And I always get emotional when I think of the scene where Chandler tells Monica that they might never be able to conceive.

I love season 3 of Friends! Friends Season 3 Episode 2: The One Where No One's Ready! Chandler and Janice! Joey and Kate! And as sad as "We Were On A Break" is, it was a pretty epic episode.

I don't think How I Met Your Mother needs its finale to be re-imagined because that was what it was working towards all along. It was clever writing, but most of the audience didn't like it, which kind of goes back to what I said at the beginning.

Robin Ted

The show doesn't make sense without the finale, but the audience wanted a different ending. It's like if you say you love Harry Potter, but you think that Voldemort really should have won.

The fact that the point of the show was unpalatable to the viewers says something. I'm not sure what, but it says something.

That being said, yes, it comes down to what you like. We both like both shows and both prefer different ones. Neither shall sway the other, so let us part as friends and leave it to the fanbase to vote.

Sarah: See, I disagree about the finale, even though that probably hurts my argument. The finale was not what the show was about, and a lot of people agree. That is the only part of How I Met Your Mother that I dislike because it didn't make sense to me.

But a lot of things didn't make sense to me on Friends -- Rachel and Joey anyone? Fat Monica?

Both shows had their hiccups, but there's no denying the impact they both made.

Yes, we shall let the fans vote!

TV Is Too Obsessed With The Silence Of The Lambs

$

0

It has been 30 years since The Silence of the Lambs premiered on the silver screen.

Since then, the film has been tremendously influential on pop culture -- especially TV.

You may have never seen it, but chances are you know everything about The Silence of the Lambs just from watching your favorite TV shows.

Hannibal!Dwight - The Office

Clarice (a TV series about what happened to the protagonist of The Silence of the Lambs after the film's events) just premiered.

Less than 10 years before Clarice began airing, Hannibal (a prequel series about the infamous Dr. Hannibal Lecter) ran for three seasons on NBC.

Even when a TV series doesn't directly connect to The Silence of The Lamb, many have taken inspiration from it.

The Silence of the Lambs popularized the idea of consulting a convicted serial killer to catch another serial killer. Just about every investigative procedural has done that plot.

Transport Chair - The Rookie Season 2 Episode 10

The Rookie Season 2 Episode 11 and The Rookie Season 2 Episode 20 had Nolan and the others turn to serial killer Rosalind Dyer for help catching the serial killer who abducted Chen and then Armstong.

NCIS Season 3 Episode 3 had Gibbs working with a serial killer he previously collared to capture a copycat killer.

Some shows go even further than just borrowing the film's general ideas. Betty Cooper's storyline has been one long remake of The Silence of the Lambs since Riverdale Season 2. Spoofing The Silence of the Lambs became a recurring theme during Angie Tribecca Season 3.

Don't think it's just procedurals or mystery shows referencing The Silence of the Lambs.

Star Trek with the Lambs

On Star Trek: Deep Space Nice Season 3 Episode 25, the scene where Dax confronts Joran, a murderer, was shot much like Clarice's first encounter with Hannibal Lecter.

A later episode, Star Trek: Deep Space Season 7 Episode 13, had Dax consulting Joran to catch a murderer, making it an episode-long homage to The Silence of the Lambs.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine isn't the only science fiction TV show to reference The Silence of The Lambs.

Stargate SG-1 Season 4 Episode 15 took inspiration from it too. O'Neill had to seek help from the incarcerated ex-colonel Maybourne. Maybourne then escaped and called O'Neill from a tropical location, just like Hannibal Lecter.

Saturday morning cartoons have gotten in on the act. Fillmore Season 1 Episode 1 was a Silence of the Lambs spoof -- with vandalism substituting for murder and cannibalism.

Fillmore

Many shows have recreated or spoofed key sequences or images from the film.

Less than a year after The Silence of the Lambs came out in the theaters, Parker Lewis Can't Lose Season 2 Episode 4 parodied the of image Hannibal in a restraining wheeler.

On Monk Season 3 Episode 3, Monk's climactic scene wearing night-vision goggles to track the villain of the week in his apartment was an homage to The Silence of the Lambs sequence where Jaime Gumb uses night-vision goggles to stalk Clarice in a dark basement.

The homage is even more notable because actor Ted Levine starred in both The Silence of the Lambs and Monk.

Stottlemeyer

When Barney tries to avoid getting slapped on How I Met Your Mother Season 5 Episode 9, his speech to Robin spoofs Hannibal's speech to Clarice.

When Dwight sliced off a dummy's face and put it on like a mask on The Office Season 5 Episode 13, he looked just like Hannibal. To complete the impression, he said, in a very Hannibal-like voice, "Clarice."

Speaking of quoting from the movie, TV characters quote, paraphrase, or reference lines from it all the time.

"Quid pro quo. I tell you things; you tell me things." Dean paraphrased the line on Supernatural Season 5 Episode 11.

Dean Has a Beer - Supernatural Season 15 Episode 19

"I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice bottle of Chianti." Jake references the quote on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 11

"It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again." This quote seems popular with TV doctors. Dr. George O'Malley mentioned it on Grey's Anatomy Season 2 Episode 10, and Dr. Perry Cox mentioned it on Scrubs Season 1 Episode 12.

The list above is only a fraction of The Silence of the Lambs' references to grace TV screens. It's not hard to see why TV is obsessed with it.

It's a great movie (although not without controversy). Hannibal Lecter is one of the most terrifying and mesmerizing villains of all time. Plus, the images and dialogue are iconic.

Hannibal Lecter - Clarice

As revered as The Silence of the Lambs is, it might be time to let it go. So much of it has been repeatedly referenced or spoofed; it's hard to imagine any TV show (even great ones) coming up with a fresh take on the material.

There are so many other horror and thriller films for TV to riff from. Poor Clarice may never stop hearing the lambs' scream, but TV should move on from The Silence of the Lambs.

Over to you, TV Fanatics! Is it time for TV to say good-bye to The Silence of the Lambs references?

How I Met Your Father: Hilary Duff to Lead HIMYM Sequel at Hulu

The How I Met Your Mother franchise is not dead yet.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, How I Met Your Father has nabbed a series order at Hulu, with Hilary Duff (Younger, Lizzie McGuire) set as the lead.

10 episodes have been ordered, confirming that there was no pilot and that the project was picked up on the quality of the idea alone.

Plenty of Laughs to Go Around

It's quite the turn of events when you consider that there have already been multiple attempts at bringing the series to fruition.

This Is Us and Love, Victor showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger will shepherd the series for Hulu.

HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will return to exec produce the series alongside Aptaker and Berger.

Kelsey and Charles - Younger Season 7 Episode 1

Duff, meanwhile, will also take a producer credit on the series, while 20th Television will serve as the studio.

"Kids, I’m going to tell you an incredible story: It’s the story of how two writers got lucky enough to make their dream TV show for nine seasons and now get to pass the torch to an inspired new creative team with their own incredible story to tell, the story of How I Met Your Father," Bays and Thomas said in a joint statement Wednesday.

"We are honored by their passion and vision, and look forward to helping them tell a legendary new story. (Thanks to all the HIMYM fans out there who waited for it.)"

"We are beyond excited to be bringing How I Met Your Father to Hulu," said Aptaker and Berger.

Kelsey confused - Younger Season 7 Episode 4

"Carter and Craig’s iconic original series revolutionized the half-hour comedy, and we are so honored to be carrying the torch forward for the next generation — and with Hilary Duff no less!"

"We can’t wait for audiences to meet Sophie and her crew, and watch them come into their own and find love in modern-day New York City. And we hope nobody thinks it’s weird that Bob Saget will be playing old Hilary Duff’s voice."

Duff is coming off a seven-season run on TV Land/Hulu/Paramount+ series, Younger, in which she played the role of Kelsey Peters.

There were reports of a spinoff featuring Duff last year, but there's no telling whether this means the show is dead. It's possible Duff could appear in both.

Kelsey drinks - Younger Season 7 Episode 4

Duff was also attached to the ill-fated Lizzie McGuire reboot which was scrapped after two episodes at Disney+ after the streamer wanted the show to geared towards a younger audience.

Duff was vocal about wanting to give longtime fans an authentic tale about the titular character in her thirties, living in New York.

"I've been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie," said Duff.

"As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby."

Kelsey goes out - Younger Season 7 Episode 4

"Isaac and Elizabeth are brilliant, and I can’t wait to work alongside them and all of their genius. Just fangirling over here getting to join the Hulu Originals and 20th families. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6½'s in there!"

As for what the new show is about, here's the logline:

In the near future, Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

Kelsey unsure - Younger Season 7 Episode 2

"How I Met Your Mother is a crown jewel in the 20th library and its fans have clamored for more ever since our final broadcast seven years ago," said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television.

"Our genius producers Isaac and Elizabeth who are — wait for it — legendary within our halls, have created a spectacular new take which both honors the original and is entirely their own."

"Carter and Craig will return as executive producers, and who better to star as the central character than the incredible Hilary Duff?"

"Many thanks to Craig Erwich and everyone at Hulu Originals for loving the script as much as we did and to our fantastic team who helped put this all together. I could not be more excited. Let the speculation as to who the father is commence!"

Kelsey smiles - Younger Season 7 Episode 2

"How I Met Your Mother continues to be one of the most innovative and beloved comedies on television,” said Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.

"Isaac and Elizabeth have an inspired take on this new version that honors what Carter and Craig created with the original and moves the franchise forward."

"Isaac and Elizabeth have proven to be rich storytellers and great partners to us at Hulu Originals and across the Walt Disney Co. family."

"Coupled with the passion and infectious energy Hilary brings to every role she takes on, we can’t wait to suit up and bring audiences How I Met Your Father."

Kelsey shocked - Younger Season 7 Episode 2

The original HIMYM aired on CBS and ran from 2005-14.

Hulu's How I Met Your Father Is Not The Worst Idea Ever

$

Years have passed, but the How I Met Your Mother series finale (How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 23 and How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 24) remains terrible.

Those episodes committed many unforgivable TV sins.

It rendered the entire series pointless.

How I Met Sophie - How I Met Your Mother

It killed the rewatch value because even random episodes could remind you of the finale and how it undermined the series as a whole.

And there are many, many other problems people have pointed out and discussed since the fateful broadcast.

Barney's Hot-Crazy Scale - How I Met Your Mother

Around the time How I Met Your Mother was airing its final season, a spin-off, How I Met Your Dad, was in the works.

When the news broke, networks passed on the spin-off not long after the How I Met Your Mother series finale aired. It seemed like karma.

And the end of a "How I Met Your --" franchise.

Of course, in TV land, no idea stays dead.

Tired and Sad Marshall - How I Met Your Mother

A new spin-off/sequel series, How I Met Your Father, has been announced.

While the initial reaction was to scream, "No, no, please for the love of G-d, no," the few details known about the project have been surprisingly reassuring.

Instead of a broadcast comedy like its predecessor, it's going to be a streaming series. This fact alone is already a huge change in How I Met Your Father's favor.

One of the chief complaints about How I Met Your Mother is it ran for too long.

Blah Blah (Abigail Spencer)

The first four seasons had their not-so-stellar episodes, but the rot set in during How I Met Your Mother Season 5. While the back half of the series had some highs, the show was never as good as it was during the early years.

Ending the series at How I Met Your Mother Season 4 or earlier might have also prevented the backlash the series finale created with the choice of having Robin and Ted end up together.

Over How I Met Your Mother's nine seasons, the series constantly showed us (1) Ted, and Robin should not be together and (2) Ted letting go of Robin.

If the series had ended earlier, it wouldn't have repeated those plot points so often and possibly retained (more) fan support for Ted and Robin.

The Woman Under The Umbrella - How I Met Your Mother

Since How I Met Your Father will be a streamer series and streamer series don't tend to have as long runs, it's unlikely to run for nine seasons.

The episode count will be shorter as well. Ten episodes were ordered for the first season, which seems to be the standard amount for a Hulu show.

Fewer seasons and smaller episode counts mean How I Met Your Father cannot stretch out its central mystery to the absurd degree How I Met Your Mother wound up doing.

One of the frustrating features of How I Met Your Mother was how it teased big revelations only for them to be underwhelming.

Victoria (Ashley Williams)

How I Met Your Mother Season 5 Episode 12 was the series 100th episode, and there was a lot of hype about how it was going to reveal a lot about the Mother mystery.

What happened was Ted saw the Mother's ankle and Future!Ted mentioned a lot of details about the Mother.

It was disappointing because it did not move the central arc forward despite the series dishing out information about the mother.

How I Met Your Father will not (and hopefully no one working on the series thinks otherwise) have the luxury of playing these kinds of games with the audience.

The Kids Are Grown Up - How I Met Your Mother

There's no time for it when a season only spans ten episodes.

No doubt there will be episodes where little or nothing about the Father is revealed, but the series will be forced to have episodes where the reveals are more substantial and move Sophie, the protagonist, closer to the goal. Furthermore, the periods between major revelations (not counting the season breaks) will be much shorter.

This should prevent the audience from feeling much of the frustration it had with How I Met Your Mother.

Another reassuring point is Hulu, and not Netflix or any other streamer who follows the binge model for releases, will be home to How I Met Your Father.

Robin Sparkles - How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother shined more on an episodic level than it did as an overall series. Fortunately, Hulu releases new episodes weekly.

This should encourage the How I Met Your Father writers to think more about crafting good individual episodes instead of treating the series as a very long movie.

The audience benefits because there will be more time to appreciate individual episodes and scenes than if the audience could watch one episode right after another.

It would be a bridge too far to say How I Met Your Father will avoid all the pitfalls of How I Met Your Mothers because it knows what mistakes to avoid. Plenty of franchises make the same mistakes over and over again.

What's hopeful is How I Met Your Father will be different from How I Met Your Mother in ways that should help the fledgling series do a better job of telling its story.

How I Met Your Mother Co-Creator Wants to Edit, "Remove Certain Stuff" From Series

How I Met Your Mother was an excellent comedy series, but it was not without its flaws.

Co-Creator Carter Bays is opening up about how he wishes he could "remove" certain parts of the series.

Bays took to Twitter on Friday to reveal that he is currently re-watching the series from start to finish, seven years after its conclusion.

One Seriously Scary High Five

"I'm still doing a HIMYM rewatch and trying to keep my commentary to a minimum but I just have to say I'm at the end of S3 and my gosh, how am I only 1/3 of the way through this thing?? There's so much of it!" he wrote.

"The hardest laughs so far were every scene of [Will Forte playing Barney’s co-worker Randy Wharmpess]. I found myself wanting Rebound Bro to become a spinoff," he continued.

"Also I won't go into specifics but I'll just say I would love to go into an edit room and go George Lucas on this thing and remove certain stuff I really wish wasn't in there and I bet nobody would miss."

Barney's Hot-Crazy Scale - How I Met Your Mother

While he didn't indicate which moments he would like to remove, the episode he mentioned focuses on Barney helping Randy pick up women.

In one scene, Barney tells Robin to help, or he would leak a sex tape of them.

Bays is set to executive produce Hulu's forthcoming How I Met Your Father, which will star Hilary Duff.

This Is Us and Love, Victor showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are set as showrunners.

The Woman Under The Umbrella - How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Father Trailer: Hilary Duff Searches for Love

The first trailer for How I Met Your Father signals a big departure from How I Met Your Mother.

Bob Saget narrated the original series as an older Ted, but he was never seen on-screen.

The spinoff is a gender-flipped take on the format with Kim Cattrall playing an older version of Hilary Duff's character.

How I Met Your Father Cast

Thankfully, Cattrall will be present on the screen and will not just narrate.

The series picks up In the near future, with Sophie (Duff) is telling her son the story of how she met his father.

The story catapults us back to the year 2021, where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

The series was ordered earlier this year and comes from This Is Us and Love, Victor showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger.

HIMYM creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will return to exec produce the series alongside Aptaker and Berger.

Bays and Thomas said in a joint statement when the show was ordered:
