How I Met Your Mother Review: Just a Small Town Girl

The Captain prepared to set sail this week on How I Met Your Mother, but rocked the boat when he asked Lily to come work for him in Rome.

On "Romeward Bound," Lily was offered her dream job, but turned it down just as quickly as it was proposed. At the bar, Robin and Barney's wedding planner turned up the heat between Barney and his best man.

Sad as I would be to see Marshall and Lily move to Rome, their exchanges were that great blend of humor and tenderhearted banter, which does so well to portray their love. I was a little surprised Lily spoke to Ted and Barney first about the job offer before Marshall. While it may have been intended to keep the story lines synced, it was a blemish on what was an otherwise solid episode.

If Lily was to go to anyone before Marshall, it would have been Robin.

Lily's Italian Nightmare

I was also a little surprised to see Marshall so willing to walk away from his law career. Yes, it was touching how he was willing to do so in order for Lily to continue her dream job.

Given what he went through to get to where he is, though, it just seemed a bit of a leap for his character and the overall story. Where Marshall didn't miss? The scene on the stoop where his broken Italian spoke volumes to Lily about how he feels for her. Also, Don Eriksen's stroll down the streets of Little Italy made for a scene you couldn't refuse praise.

Making up the other half of the episode was Ted and Barney's obsession with Liddy Gates and her oversized jacket. Well, more like the body that could melt a Nazi's face, hidden beneath it.

Ted and Barney's interactions were pretty standard scenes for the two friends, complete with a great Raiders of the Lost Arc reference, but when Ted offered Barney some unsolicited advice about Robin, it got real. The sleeping elephant in the room, the tension between the two friends who loved the same woman, suddenly woke up.

The final scene where Robin greeted Barney in a coat of her own showed once again why she is the coolest fiance ever. In the end, they got to see the redonkulous body, but what was also revealed was evidence of an old wound reopened.

How I Met Your Mother Review: Worst Night Ever

This week, we witnessed a night fans of How I Met Your Mother have both looked forward to and dreaded.

Barney's bachelor party would of course be legendary, but it also would be one of the last nights he would "suit up" as a single bro. Sadly, "The Bro Mitzvah," was more of a Bro Bris, as it came up a little short.

Barney's Bachelor Party

The acting across the board was disappointing, as the character's timing and delivery seemed off and often forced.

Then, of course, we learned the entire night was all an elaborate ruse orchestrated by Robin. The idea of giving Barney the worst evening ever was clever, if not a nod to 1997's The Game starring Michael Douglas. Now, could the poor performances from earlier in the episode all be explained away because it was all supposed to be fake and artificial?

While I wanted to sweep the leg on this episode for most of its duration, a guest appearance by William Zabka was one of my favorite moments of the season. Even if we have heard The Karate Kid was based on the wrong fighter theory before.

I didn't include Ralph Maccio because he never really waxed on. He reminded me of a Saturday Night Live host, reading lines off a teleprompter. Lily's flirtations also fell flat, save for her great Tiger Beat reference. I didn't really care for the early scenes with Robin and Loretta Stinson either, but when they started discussing Robin's napkin ring, things got interesting.

Robin: I'm not a virgin! My napkin ring has seen plenty of breadsticks and one baguette. I dated a center from the Knicks.

The return of Quinn was too ridiculous to accept, but a valuable lesson was learned. Be sure to always vet the stripper!

The delivery missed its mark at times, but Robin's ultimate prank was yet another sign of how awesome she is. Barney loved his bachelor party in the end, but would you feel the same if it happened to you?

How I Met Your Mother Review: Can You Dig It?

Marshall and Lily hit a roadblock in their preparations for Italy this week on How I Met Your Mother, calling in Ted to help sort through their mess.

And when Robin's emotional state was in disarray, Ted cane to the rescue once again.

Yes, "Something Old" reminded us how Ted has always been the glue holding this circle of friends together. Marshall and Lily are starting a new chapter abroad, while Barney and Robin count down to their new future together. Ted is still single and probably should be more concerned with the next stage of his own life, but he never hesitates to answer the call when one of his friends needs him.

It is quite possible Ted relishes these opportunities because it takes his focus off his own issues and struggles. How can he be bothered with finding his soulmate if the people he cares about need him? We saw tonight how you can try to bury the past or compartmentalize your feelings into little boxes, but sooner or later, life catches up with you and demands action.

Uncovering Her Past

Ted was reluctant to throw away any item possessing some sentimental value from his years spent as Marshall and Lily's third wheel. After all, if his friends could so easily part with things like the bean bag chair, how long would it be before they kicked him to the curb as well? At first I rolled my eyes at this fear of Ted's, but then he admitted to being aware of just how paranoid he sounded, yet he still could not help feeling that way.

Robin seemed to have the same sort of feelings when it came to Barney. Despite knowing she loves him and acknowledging how much he has grown over the years, she still could not shake the feeling her life was about to change for the worse.

When things get confusing in life, we tend to retreat back to what we know. Ted and Robin both were confused and insecure, but would they really betray a man they both love? The answer is an emphatic "no way Jose!" Ted would never strap on the emotional equivalent of a hands free belt satchel, so he could stab his friend in the back.

As absurd as Robin using the simple trowel to find her locket was, her apprehensions about marrying Barney were quite understandable. I just don't see her leaving Barney to go down the relationship path again with Ted. I know I wasn't the only one who had his face half hidden by a pillow for fear of seeing the two ex-lovers lean in for a rain soaked kiss. Thankfully it never came to that.

Breaking up the more serious aspects of tonight's episode were several very funny moments:

  • Everything about Robin in the Central Park flashback including her dream to one day brush her husband's mullet.
  • Ted bragging about his ability to pack with Tetrislike precision. (I think of the game too whenever packing my car for a trip.)
  • Ted, Marshall and Lily as Destiny's Child.
  • Barney trying to think of another hockey player besides Wayne Gretzky.
  • Barney: Stand up straight Cayden! | permalink
The one image I keep going back to though is Ted taking off the yellow rain coat/poncho and leaving it on the bean bag chair to go and buy fanny packs for Marshall and Lily.
Obviously it wasn't the yellow umbrella, but I can't help but think that was a nod to the much discussed symbol for the mother. What did you think?

How I Met Your Mother Review: Pop, Drop and Locket

For those who doubted the chemistry between Robin and Barney, the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale presented a pretty strong case for why they are so good together.

Barney may have missed Robin's cry for help when she couldn't find her buried locket, but he more than made up for it on "Something New."

Reserving their memorable table by the window and producing a pair of the first cigars they ever smoked together showed just how into the relationship Barney is. Maybe you could chalk that up to Barney's amazing attention to detail. Scenes like the one where he gave Robin one last kiss as they left the apartment, however, did well to show the two are not just great friends - but very much in love with each other.

And how about the cameo from Ranjit? What a great touch that was.

Cristin Milioti as The Mother

There has never been any real room to debate Marshall and Lily's feelings for one another, but the news of Marshall's appointment thrown up against Lily's dream job should prove to be one of the biggest tests of their relationship. Is it possible Marshall's brother has gotten bigger since last we saw him? Maybe it was just Marshall's thinner frame these days, but his bro looked ginormous.

Like Lily, I saw the crushed nuts prank coming all the way, but at the airport I really thought he was being nice and offering to help Marshall with his bag... silly me.

Back East, I thought Lily put together Ted's reason for moving to Chicago a little too quickly. Then I remembered how Lily has always had a nose for lies, a.k.a. "where's the poop?" Ted probably would have found the locket while packing up his apartment, but at least by telling him about it, Lily also got to tell him to be careful. Let's hope Ted can get that apartment back when he eventually decides to stay in Manhattan. I have always loved that place as well as the house in Westchester.

Another thing I have always loved about the show is any scene where we get to see Robin drunk. She was absolutely hilarious in Lily's flashback, with her allusion to the gold watch scene from Pulp Fiction

Ted planning on leaving Sunday night from the wedding is a nice idea at heart. I get he doesn't want to be a downer and ruin Lily's "Christmas," but his not being there will be just as odd and disappointing for Barney and Robin. If leaving early is what it's going to take for him to finally meet the mother, though, than so be it.

Seeing the mother's face has been such an anticipated moment, I almost didn't believe it was happening. I think one of the best aspects of the episode was that while we were finally deemed worthy as fans to gaze upon Ted's future wife, there still remained a number of unresolved issues at the end. I have been wondering what exactly was going to keep us all coming back next season, but now I absolutely can't wait.

So was it as good as you had hoped? Was she what you expected? Let us know what you thought and have a legendary off season.

Cristin Milioti as The Mother: Who is She?

Cristin Milioti has landed one of the most sought-after roles on network television, as the actress was introduced as The Mother on last night's How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale, leaving many to wonder:

Who is Cristin Milioti?!?

The Tony and Grammy Award-nominated actress concluded her run on Broadway's Once in March; has appeared on episodes of 30 Rock, The Sopranos and The Good Wife; and will share the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.

"It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years," co-creator Carter Bays said in a statement. "And yet Cristin Milioti is, against all odds, exactly what we were looking for. She made us laugh on 30 Rock, she made us swoon in Once, and her ukulele skills are no joke.

"We're thrilled to welcome her to the How I Met Your Mother family, and look forward to getting to know her – and the character she plays – much better in the coming final season. And to all the fans, on behalf of all of us writers, cast and crew: Thank you for sticking with us on this wild journey. Our ninth season will tell the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever. We hope you like it. Next stop, Farhampton..."

From five-second cameo to series regular...

After her brief, albeit VERY memorable, guest-starring turn on the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale, Cristin Milioti has been promoted to series regular for the ninth and final season of this beloved CBS sitcom.

Cristin Milioti on HIMYM

As first reported by TV Line, Miloti's ascension marks the first time HIMYM has expanded its core roster beyond Josh Radnor, Alyson Hannigan, Neil Patrick Harris, Cobie Smulders and Jason Segel.

Look for her to play a critical role this fall, as How I Met Your Mother creators have said Season 9 will actually take place over the course of Barney and Robin's wedding. That ought to be interesting.

Sherri Shepherd is on her way to How I Met Your Mother. And a certain key cast member better take notice.

The View co-host Tweeted late last week that she was on the set of this CBS sitcom filming scenes with her "baby Jason Segel."

Based on previous casting notes, it seems clear Shepherd will portray Camille on the hour-long September 23 opener, a character who gets into such a confrontation with Marshall on a plane ride to New York that both are removed from the flight.

The How I Met Your Mother Season 9 premiere will be titled "The Locket."

Ellie Kemper has scored an invite to Robin and Barney's wedding.

The former Office secretary will guest star on at least one episode of How I Met Your Mother Season 9, TV Line confirms, stopping by the CBS sitcom as Cassie.

The character is described by co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas as attractive, single and, as Ted will apparently discover, "unfortunate" guests at this fall's nuptials, around which the entire final HIMYM season will be based.

Awkward Meal Alert!

Earlier this week it was also confirmed that Sherri Shepherd would play a role on Season 9, coming on board as a plane passenger who tussles with Marshall.
