How I Met Your Mother celebrated its final episode of 2013 in grand fashion.

Marshall met the mother, Andrew Rannells issued a few emotional prostate exams as a character named Darren and Lily hit the Pause button on any marital issues so she could embrace family.

The most memorable moments of How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 13 definitely took place between Marshall and the titular woman, however.

She freaked her new friend out in the van by dropping serious information on him and they both realized they can often be overly kind. What else did they have in common? Did Marshall finally arrive at the inn?

How I Met Your Mother Review: Slappetite for Destruction

Slappy New Year everyone!

The holidays have come and gone, but Marshall had one last gift to give Barney beneath the willow tree. How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 14 revisited one of the most beloved pastimes in the show's nine season run:

Marshall slapping Barney.

Marshall, Ready to Slap

As we flashed back several to several weeks ago, the tables were turned on Barney as, for once, he was made to sit through a fantastically fake story. Marshall's meetings with the three masters of slap were highlighted by a great montage of him getting slapped by a number of Barney's exes.

As his hand began to glow with the disdain of Barney's girlfriends past, Marshall realized that with his great new power came responsibility... and also some unforeseen downside.

Look at this thing! I'll never have cold pizza again! I'll never have cold pizza again...

Marshall

Of the three "masters" Marshall visited, Ted as The Calligrapher was my favorite. Marshall took numerous shots at his best friend, but Ted also got in on the action, calling out his single status.

Barney tried to appeal to Robin's love for him, but even she would not dare step in the way of the inevitable. So Barney took it like a man and was rewarded with a song from Boyz II Men and another montage, this time full of Marshall's slaps over the years.

With 17 hours to go until the wedding, there was almost no reference to the big finale, which leads to to think and hope, we might be in store for some more great How I Met Your Mother traditions to be revisited once more before the season's end. The question is, which ones?

Marshall still has one slap left. Will Barney be sporting matching Marshall hand prints when it comes time to say "I do?"

Yes, the holidays are over.

But How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 14 made it clear that Marshall had one final gift to give Barney: the ultimate slap.

We flashed back a number of years on the fun installment, as Marshall time time told a crazy story about how he met with three masters of slap. Our favorite? Probably Ted as The Calligrapher. Ridiculous, awesome stuff.

Also awesome? The way Barney tried to appeal to Robin... but come on. She knew she could not get in the way of this inevitability.

So, with 17 hours to go until the wedding, how did things wrap up?

It took a few days, but Carter Bays has taken to Twitter and addressed the controversy that arose out of How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 14 on Monday.

Not long after the installment concluded, #HowIMetYourRacism was trending because many viewers were offended by Cobie Smulders, Josh Radnor and Alyson Hannigan appearing in yellow face while Marshall explained how he mastered the Slap of a Million Exploding Suns.

How I Met Your Mother Scene

In a series of Tweets on behalf of himself and fellow creator, Bays wrote this morning:

"Hey guys, sorry this took so long. @himymcraig and I want to say a few words about #HowIMetYourRacism. With Monday's episode, we set out to make a silly and unabashedly immature homage to Kung Fu movies, a genre we've always loved. But along the way we offended people.

"We're deeply sorry, and we're grateful to everyone who spoke up to make us aware of it. We try to make a show that's universal, that anyone can watch and enjoy. We fell short of that this week, and feel terrible about it. To everyone we offended, I hope we can regain your friendship, and end this series on a note of goodwill. Thanks. @CarterBays @HimymCraig."

The end is nearly here for How I Met Your Mother.

And if you think it's been bittersweet to watch as a viewer, imagine how co-creator Carter Bays and Craig Thomas feel.

“It's been a delight writing this year and planning it out,” Bays said during an on-set chat at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour yesterday. “And it's been a challenge.”

Bays admitted that setting the entire final season over the course of one weekend has not been an easy task: “There's been pitfalls in it through the whole season over the weekend, but it's been such an experience you give yourself challenges.”

Added Thomas: “We aimed for the idea that a Season 9 episode would feel unlike other seasons, that we would give the audience a feeling that something different is happening, but it's still How I Met Your Mother.”

A Drunken Barney

And then there’s the cast – Neil Patrick Harris (Barney), Josh Radnor (Ted), Cobie Smulders (Robin), Jason Segel (Marshall) and Alyson Hannigan (Lily) – all of whom stuck with the show from the pilot.

Harris, perhaps the biggest breakout star, summed up the experience by telling reporters “we’re saying the word last a lot more than we ever did. For a TV show, you're always hoping that it goes on and on and on and on as long as it possibly can."

The actor added that he and his colleagues "knew that it was going to come to an end" at some point, "but we never really talked about the end, so this season has been filled with a lot of us saying, ‘Oh.’ We were walking down here just now, ‘Oh, this is our last TCA panel,’ wistfully."

“We really did have an eight‑year plan from the pilot,” Bays said. “We kind of knew how we wanted to end it, which turns out to be nine years, which is great, but we were so naive that it would just keep going.

"The beginning of Season 2, we shot part of what is going to air in the series finale with those kids who are now 53 and 62.”

The sitcom about a group of friends dealing with relatable 20 and 30-something topics such as relationships, family and careers wasn’t a hit immediately when it premiered in 2005.

“The first two seasons seemed very on the bubble the entire time, which actually I thought was good for us and for the show,” Harris said, explaining:

“It gave us the opportunity to come up with our own sense of humor and sometimes when a show is thrust into success right away, there's high expectations for them to come up with terrific stuff super fast, and we got to develop a great vocabulary and weird little inside jokes so that by the time fans ‑‑ Netflix style and syndication style -- started watching it, it had found its own voice, so I liked the slow-burn elements to our show.”

Segel added that he was always ready for the ax to drop on the series.

“I had been part of a couple shows that I loved and they got cancelled within the first season. So I really felt like there was no way you could equate quality with whether or not it lasted... I was always ready for the show to be canceled, and then the fact that we got along so well made it almost a sure thing to be canceled. It's just the best gift ever that it stuck around for so long. We lucked out. It's been like a dream experience.”

The Friendship Question

What audition memories stand out?

Smulders, who is Canadian like her character, wouldn't get into specifics, but did admit: “I was just trying to get a work visa and I was willing to do anything. Anything.”

We finally met the Mother (played by Cristin Milioti) on the How I Met Your Mother Season 8 finale, of course, and Cristin Milioti told us that coming on board at first was "very scary." But...

"I could not have been more warmly welcomed here by everyone. I don't know why I almost started crying right now, because I feel like I have no right to cry.”

She added that the job “has made this a dream come true for me. It's definitely like my own specific thing and I haven't been here for that long. It's been fantastic and very warm and lovely.”

Because we’ve missed out on a big chunk of the Mother’s life - since she’s always been right outside the periphery of our main cast - there is a plan for viewers to be filled in during this final season.

"We're going to get more glimpses of their relationship for sure and some big moments in it,” Thomas teased. “And there's also this wonderful episode, our 200th episode, that fills in the eight years in the life of the mother that we're really excited about and proud about that airs in a couple weeks -- and not to embarrass her for one second, Cristin is amazing in it and there's a lot of fun intersections between her life and our gang.

"So our gang is in that episode, but really it's her episode, and I feel that kicks off the end game of the season and the series where you're going to see more of her and Ted and learn more about them, and that episode kicks that off beautifully.”

But how will How I Met Your Mother actually wrap up?

“I cornered Carter and Craig at our Christmas party,” Harris said. "And after, like, five drinks, I got them in the corner, and said, ‘Now it's time. I want you to tell me everything. Spill the beans. Tell me how it all ends,’ and they did. They stood there and they told me they would tell me all of it and it's more complicated than you would assume….and for all of our fans, they will be far from disappointed.”

Moving forward, How I Met Your Dad is on tap, meaning Bays and Thomas had to answer an important question: whether HIMYM cast member will pop up on the new series.

"I feel like if success of that show is good and goes like Season 3 when we're out of ideas, that would be a fun thing to do," Bays said. "Bring back one of these guys and pay them a bunch of money for the week.”

("I'm in," Harris quickly said.)

Concluded Thomas:

"Whatever How I Met Your Dad would ever be, if it goes, it has to prove itself on its own, and the show deserves the best possible ending that it could get, and the fans who stuck with us deserve that, and that's what we intend to give that.”

How I Met Your Mother Season 9 airs Mondays at 8 p.m on CBS.

How I Met Your Mother Review: Unbroken

And the truth shall set you free! What an episode we were treated to tonight. Barney's face was still red from Marshall's latest slap, as I'm sure there were some fans who were still feeling the sting of disappointment from the last episode. It was widely debated, but I can't imagine there were many fans who were left disappointed tonight after How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 15.

A Drunken Barney

To start things off we saw Ted in bed with an extremely pregnant mother. Their chemistry was adorable and everything I have come to expect from the future couple. As they finally decided it was time to get to the hospital, I loved the quick shot of the pink pacifier left sitting on the nightstand. It was a great little hint that this was the birth of their son they were heading off to. By the end of the episode, it was of course revealed they were indeed on the way to their son Luke's birth with their daughter Penny in tow. All the speculation was finally laid to rest as we learned the names of both their children. Thank you C&C Mother Factory for that.

With the pause still in place, Marshall shared some embarrassing souvenirs he picked up while visiting Ted's childhood home. The Totally Awesome Ted mug should definitely be offered on CBS's online store. After the final item was revealed, the attention moved from Ted and his balloon friend, to the very intoxicated Barney.

Ted's review of the various levels of Barney's drunkenness over the years was one of my favorite montages of the season. Speaking like Jabba the Hutt was pretty epic, but Barney's Richard Dawson drunk was an entirely different level of amazing. If you've never seen the late, great, former host of Family Feud in action, you need to. You will quickly see why he was a perfect fit for someone Barney would channel, while in a drunken fugue state.

Before Ted and Robin could take advantage of Barney's truth serum drunk, they first had to make sure this newest shade of blacked out was legit.

Ted: Uh Barney who's taller, me or you?
Barney: You're taller, I wear lifts in all my shoes.

With its validity established, the fun began. Ted and Robin took turns asking questions and the truth came out about Barney and Ted's mom. We also learned/confirmed how Robin's family is loaded. The most epic truth though, was Ted finally getting to the bottom of what Barney actually does for a living. As Barney explained how he ended up in his job and ultimately revealed to his boss how he had been corroborating with the authorities, I couldn't help but sense a little nod to Meet Joe Black. At one point during that sequence, Barney's hair actually resembled Brad Pitt's in the film. Anyone else get that? Either way, it was a pretty good twist I thought. Robin had already gone to bed, but I really liked when Barney explained to Ted just how happy he was.

For a long time, deep down I felt sort of, broken? But I don't feel that way anymore. Robin, along with the idea that vengeance will soon be mine, has made me 100% awesome.

Barney

Robin went to bed happy, having gotten what she wanted to know out of Barney, but as we saw in the final scene, Trevor Hudson looked to be quite a bear of a ring bearer. Barney wasn't necessarily lying though. He certainly could have worked with his mother during some stint with a circus or while at the M.I.T.

Robin will no doubt have her own claws out when she sees Trevor walk down that aisle, but Marshall saw an entirely different kind of anger in Lily's eyes tonight when the two finally un-paused their truce. Initially the situation took on a funny tone, with Marshall trying to prolong sex with Lily. He even gave us one of the night's best references when he recalled the Unscrambled Spice Channel Glitch of '93.

With just hours to go until the wedding it looked like Lily and Marshall still had some serious reconciling still to do. I assumed it was Ranjit Lily called to come pick her up.  Then Ted and the mother exited the inn moments later as far as the scene went, but years into the future as we well know. I just thought it a strange shot cinematographically. Maybe I am entering the over analyzing drunk stage. After all, I thought this was one of the best episodes of the season and it could not have come at a better time. What did you other mother minions think?

How I Met Your Mother Review: On to the Next One

Unlike what Jay-Z says, moving on to the next one for the mother was not so easy.

The focus shifted away from the show's regulars on How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 16, as Episode 200 turned the spotlight on the title character's life in the years proceeding her meeting Ted.

From the opening scene, where Kelly arrived late from the wrong MacLaren's, we were treated to an episode full of Ted's future bride. The significance of the episode to come was reinforced when the opening credits montage featured pictures of her and her friends rather than Ted and the gang.

On the monumental night when Marshall and Lily got engaged and Ted met Robin, the mother experienced a completely different array of emotions.

The moment she mentioned the last two gifts Max had gotten her on her birthday, I noted how I liked the cut of this guy's jib. Sadly, we never meet him. A phone call from his number told the mother her boyfriend had died.

The episode then really started pulling on your heart strings when she returned home from Max's funeral and opened his present to find the ukulele. Roughly two years had passed when we next saw her, still coping with Max's death.

Emerging in a stunning red dress, I was surprised to hear Kelly say it was St. Patrick's Day. The meaning behind wearing red on such occasion has several widely held meanings, but for fans of How I Met Your Mother, there is only one thing the color yellow represents.

After a good talk with Mitch, who was short on clothes but full of good advice, we got to see how the mother and Cindy (Rachel Bilson) met. At first I thought her invitation to Cindy to move in was a tad impulsive. After dwelling on it a bit, I ended up liking how she couldn't help but be a nice person. Then, as she explained to Cindy how she had given up on love, you could see why she and Ted were right for each other.

As Ted walked into the classroom, the music crescendoed just perfectly as the mother took note of the young professor before her. Ted is also old fashioned and a big believer in "the one." He luckily found a woman who would laugh at his jokes.

Before Ted would get his chance, the mother met two other men who would impact her life. Darren we know about, but Louis certainly seemed like a good guy. Unfortunately, during their breakfast together, we saw that while he may have been a catch, he wasn't a match.

Fate took over from there, landing the mother in Louis's beach house the night before the wedding. His surprise proposal wasn't much to speak of, but the scene that followed certainly was. The mother asking Max if it was okay to move on was so touching, especially having heard the way she described their relationship earlier.

It's silly, but it's like the first lottery ticket I ever bought was, kaboom, jackpot! And I'm pretty sure I'm not going to win again. Not like that anyway.

The Mother

If you weren't reaching for tissues after that scene, I'm sure a number of eyes were being dried after her rendition of La Vie en Rose. If it is available, it will quickly top download lists everywhere.

Did anyone else think Ted's tone and language, while describing that first time he heard her sing, had a sort of final tone to it? While some may have been left wondering if that meant the mother is no longer alive, Ted returned to his room to find Barney missing.

This brought the show back to the wedding at hand, but one of the best aspects of the episode were all the instances where the mother crossed paths with the gang in past episodes like No Tomorrowand The Time Travelers.

I also have to note how happy Curtis was to hand over the room key to the mother, knowing well that Ted was next door. That was a nice little touch in what was certainly one of the best episodes in the show's celebrated run.

How I Met Your Mother Review: One Shining Moment

Last week's Mother-centric installment was one of the show's best.

With so many episodes this season staged at The Farhampton Inn - as the hours until the wedding sluggishly continue to tick away - I feel like the inn has begun to have the same effect on fans as the Overlook Hotel had on Jack Torrance in The Shining.

Instead of the Grady twins, we were treated to a pair of Lily's who helped Marshall see what really was at the heart of their fight.

If you keep lying to me, if you keep cutting me out of decisions, if you keep using words like winning and losing when you talk about our marriage? It's not like it will happen all at once, but if you keep acting this way, little by little, you're gonna lose me.

Lily

The whole scene with the Lilys, Marshall and his late father, felt like a bizarre dream. 2006 Lily asking how many MySpace friends she now had was pretty funny. In the end though, instead of a heart felt apology, all Marshall said was how much he missed her while she was gone.

What about all the stuff ghost Lily had just gone over?

Barney probably won't remember taking Justin and Kyle under his wing, but sadly we all will. As big a fan of Tim Gunn as I am, I couldn't help but feel like he has worn out his welcome as a guest star.

I think he may have overtaken Billy Zabka with this week's cameo on How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 17. And was that final exchange with the two guys supposed to be some revelation by Barney?

Whatever you do in this life, it's not legendary, unless your friends are there to see it.

Barney

That whole segment was legen...well put it this way, I'm still waiting for it.

Ted finally let go of Robin, but that storyline has long been deflated. After all the hoops Ted jumped through to find that locket, I was shocked to not see him make any effort to jump in and recover it.

We still may in an upcoming episode and, yes, I get how it was a metaphor for him letting go of Robin, but I'm a seller of it all.  It's like how I'm still upset with Rose for dropping the "Heart of the Ocean" into the water at the end of Titanic.

After How I Met Your Mother Season 9 Episode 16, my expectations for the remaining outings were sky high - but as I watched with disbelief as Robin floated away from Ted, my week old optimism sank like Jack Dawson.

I tried to find a few morsels to satisfy me, but was left wanting as there was very little meat on the show's funny bone this week. What did you think?

Meet the new Ted.

CBS has announced that Greta Gerwig will anchor How I Met Your Dad, the planned How I Met Your Mother spinoff that will follow the same concept as this long-running sitcom… just with gender roles switched around.

Gerwig - a writer/actress who received a Golden Globe nomination for Frances Ha - will portray Sally.

The main character is described as a direction-less young woman who has never really grown up and who has realized she has little in common with her husband of one year.

A divorce is on tap, which leads Sally to confiding in her close circle of friends.

12 Characters That Make Us Want to Punch Our Television Screens

They may appear on some of our favorite shows, and they may even have their shining moments.

Overall, though, they sort of make us want to throw our television sets out the window.

It's rarely the faults of the actors or actresses behind these characters, it's just that they don't belong on the show in the first place. Or they're worn out their welcome. Or they just... won't... stop.... whining.

These irritating individuals are lawyers, witches and super agents; they are young and they are old. But they have one thing in common:

They are super annoying! Flip through the following photo gallery and decide if you agree with us and/or who you would add to this list from across the TV dial:

12 Characters That Make Us Want to Punch the TV
Consider us proud members of Team Felicity. Laurel is more often than not a (very pretty) thorn in Oliver's side.

Skye

2. Skye

Skye is new to the Agents of SHIELD team. But we're sort of sick of her being used as a conduit for the audience when it comes to explaining how this universe works.

Dr. Alan Farragut

3. Dr. Alan Farragut

Dr. Alan Farragut acts like the man in charge on Helix. But he doesn't seem to actually really now anything.

Charlotte Grayson

4. Charlotte Grayson

Revenge has already rid us of Declan. Can't his ex-girlfriend be next?

Alexis Castle

5. Alexis Castle

From bringing home Pi to sleep on the sofa for weeks on end without ever asking if it's okay... to slamming the door in her father's face when he came to apologize... Alexis is experiencing major growing pains.

Ted Mosby

6. Ted Mosby

When did this lovable goofball become such an annoying whiner? If he's not lamenting about not finding the love of his life, he's see-sawing over whether or not he and Robin should try and make it work again.

Bonnie Bennett

7. Bonnie Bennett

Has Bonnie Bennett smiled in three seasons? This Vampire Diaries character is either moping or swooping in with random spells to save the day.

Scarlett O'Connor

8. Scarlett O'Connor

Scarlett has a whiney little girl voice, can't handle the career she chose... now she's getting addicted to speed. She also dared to yell at Connie Britton!

Evan Lawson

9. Evan Lawson

Evan Lawson of Royal Pains has really been wearing on us the past few seasons. He just never seems to grow up or get any smarter.

Coach

10. Coach

We all love Damon Wayans Jr. But just because he appeared on one episode of New Girl a long time ago doesn't mean we want him back on a full-time basis, disrupting our favorite loft.

Girls

Yup, every single Girl. Can someone remind us why these people are friends again?

Robin Looks Shocked

From the shocked expression on Robin's face we can't wait to find out exactly what's on Barney's phone.

Much like Barney couldn't imagine the wedding being any more legendary than the story he was fed about Weekend at Barney's, I can't imagine an episode topping this one - but I hope to be proven wrong.

Amid the flash forwards and flashbacks, we were treated to many aspects of the show fans have come to love. The best of which featured a "True Story" by Barney; Ted and Marshall off on a mission together; and of course Robin and Lily pulling no punches while trying to revive the drunken groom.

Marshall was so taken aback at seeing Barney's state render him devoid of his photogenic super power that he vowed to never get "that" drunk again.

From there, we got to see how he hilariously broke his promise, but also the moments when Lily and Robin found themselves back at the bottom of the bottle.

Marshall delivering his victory speech as Batman's Commissioner Gordon was outstanding. It has to rank up there with his Beercules moments of seasons past. However, the best of the vow breaking scenes, without question, was Robin's.

First, I was so excited to see her waking up next to Barney in 2016, even if it was on the floor of some hotel in Argentina. Then came the capper, as we heard a baby cry. My elation at thinking we were about to meet baby Stinson was quickly replaced by a fit of laughter.

Robin having reflexively walked over and scooped the crying child into her arms, turned to Barney and asked "whose baby is this?"

Passing out in the wrong hotel room certainly can be written off on hefty bar tab, but there was no blaming the booze when Robin and Lily made out... for what was the third time I believe. Not only was it a great scene, but it also worked momentarily as Barney sat up clapping like a seal asking for more.

Meanwhile, Ted and Marshall were out tracking down the ingredients for the elixir. After revisiting and old joke by "throwing a Tantrum," the only thing missing from the known parts of the formula was grease. Standing in their way of securing some was a tray full of bacon.

No no no! Ted do not give me that look.
Ted; A mountain of food, a ticking clock? Come on you live for this stuff.

Marshall

As Ted ultimately stepped up to dig on the swine, he wondered aloud if he would even like the meat he for so long thought he was allergic to. How great was the look Marshall and the chef gave the camera? I always love a little fourth wall breakage.

Ted was hysterical as he growled over his tray of bacon and even funnier when he professed his love of the previously proscribed pork product.

I finally found the one Marshall. Her name, is Bacon.

Ted

We know, of course, who Ted's true love is and as he took a page out of Barney's book to make her feel better on New Year's Day 2022; we got to see the kids come barreling into their bedroom. I can't deny it, my heart did a little skip as they jumped up onto the bed.

My favorite moment, though, even if it was just a "placebro" like "Dumbro's" feather, was seeing Weekend at Barney's acted out. Complete with the string rigged high-five.

I don't think it was ever in doubt that Barney loved his friends, but seeing the measures he took to cheer them up in some of their darkest hours was special.

Inside that suit coat of his, along with a white dove no doubt, beats a big heart. How hard did your heart beat with love of this episode and where do you rank it among the season's best?
